Quote of the day

The sudden assertion of human criteria within a dehumanising framework of political manipulation can be like a flash of lightning illuminating a dark landscape

Anyone know a good US newspaper?

It's a fairly random question, I know. But following the disaster in New Orleans made me think about my news sources. I already read (*ahem* glance through) the websites of the New York Times, Washington Post, and Los Angeles Times. My knowledge of the politics behind the media in the US is limited, and I'd like to get a varied coverage of events, so if anyone could recommend some good conservative, liberal, or vaguely independent papers, I'd really appreciate it.

Matt, Matt, Matt (couldnt help it) You could try our local paper, but it only comes out on Thursdays, and it generally talks about the school kids sporting events, whats going on with town government usually takes up a small corner ... oh and my favorite The police blotter- it's a riot! (well, upon occasion there is a domestic abuse report and that is awful and we had a murder once which was scary back about 10 years ago or so.) That's about the only paper I like to read, my son was in it as a ladybug in the town parade! But if you want a good paper, The Lawrence Eagle Tribune, The Boston Globe is another good one. I tend to read rueters off the internet- they seem to be unbiased for the most part. Hope it helps!

Joeanna (x3), Thanks. The Boston Globe and Lawrence Eagle Tribune have been added to the nifty bit of software that allows me to track newspaper headlines. Local papers are always great to read, especially that proud moment when friends and family get featured. My brother was in the back of a photograph of a local politician a while back, you could just about make out his left ear. I think he still has it around somewhere, though he decided not to frame it. I appeared on the local TV news once. But I don't like to talk about that... ;)

Hey Matt, You have software that tracks newspaper headlines? or is that like my home page that gives a blurb. Im interested in foreign papers, but I either am not putting in the correct search parameters, or I give up too easy. (little ones suck the life out of me, but they are darlin little buggers) I dont know much about how Europe functions- ie government (I still cant figure out Englands system and I think it was either Owly or Brolly who tried to explain it to me) how they interact, and basically what Europe talks about. I would like a better understanding of how others function and see what can be suggested to our local government.

I use the Bloglines website: http://www.bloglines.com/ It's free, and allows you to keep track of hundreds of different newspapers. Though I normally forgot to check it for a few days and end up with about an hour's worth of headlines to look through. For some good English papers I'd recommend the Independent, Guardian, and the Times. http://www.independent.co.uk/ http://www.guardian.co.uk/ http://www.timesonline.co.uk/ The BBC has it's own website with a news section as well: http://news.bbc.co.uk/ http://worldnews.com/ also offers a good selection of papers from around the world. For indepth info on stuff like government structures you can't go far wrong with http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia (PS - No-one knows how our system works. It just does.) Happy reading! Matt, The styles of journalism are the thing to recognize, not the paper. Colleges and others have been promoting the idea of "advocacy journalism" over straight reporting for decades . One cannot assume impartiality in what is printed. This applies to liberal and conservative papers. One has to questions how reporters could possibly know what their subjects are thinking or what their motives are. Journalists tend to use advocacy to justify the shading of stories to their point of view. Impartiality has been passe for a long time. In fairness, competition from the sensationalized television and cable networks have forced print journalists to keep up in order to attract advertising dollars. The sensational sells over straight journalism every time. The largest paper in the US by far is the National Enquirer. Whereas only a few papers boast circulation of one million these days, The Enquirer has a circulation in the multi-millions. Brad and Angelina sell much better than George and family.

It’s obviously better to read widely, across political lines, rather than rely on news sources that merely flatter one’s preconceptions or reinforce some tribal identity. And, as Ttrryosborn says, clear thinking is more important than the paper in which clear thinking might occasionally appear. (Plenty of supposedly reputable papers – of all persuasions – have shoddy writing, commercial agendas and ideological blind spots. And reading widely seems a good way to spot them.) Ultimately, the merits of an argument should depend on the coherence of the argument itself, rather than whether or not we like the person making it, or the paper in which it’s published. However irritating it may be, people with whom we often disagree vehemently can still make valid points and [choke] even prove us wrong. “Brad and Angelina sell much better than George and family.” I’m guessing revelations about George and Brad together would captivate us all.

“Newspapers are the minute hand of history” – Schopenhauer There is a clear difference in results between journalists that try to be non-bias (Reuters) and journalists that don't try (Fox News). Still none of them might be non-bias in a strict philosophical sense. Respecting conflicting views to ones own is however, not a philosophical utopia beyond human capacity. Philosophy and scientific method philosophy lends you the brightest minds in human history to undress the charlatans of the minutes. Here are http://www.hongkongdaily.com/ (best site for chinese news imo) http://english.pravda.ru/ (always worth checking out) http://www.lefigaro.fr/ (in French but provocative) http://www.africabusinessdaily.com/(a different reality)

I cant read french Christian. I can barely remember the two years of Spanish I took in High school, and what I do remember was what I learned from hanging out in Lawrence Massachusetts. Is there an equivalent in english?

The whole point of asking people to recommend newspapers was so that I could get "varied coverage of events" from multiple sources. I'm well aware of the danger of relying on only a handful of papers... Anyway, thanks to everyone who made a suggestion. It's appreciated.
