ENDING VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN

openDemocracy promotes human rights and democracy through dialogue and debate. But a global debate without the female half of humanity is neither global nor democratic. Our coverage of the annual 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence is part of our 50.50 initiative to develop openDemocracy as a current affairs forum which is written, read and used equally by women and men.

Our coverage includes the launch of a series of podcasts with women working to end violence across the Arab region, together with articles and podcasts from the UK.

1. Jane Gabriel has been in Lebanon listening to women who are working to bring in Lebanon's first ever piece of legislation to protect women from violence: Enough: Ending Private Justice and Violence Against Women

2. And to women who are researching the truth behind "honour killings": Femicide and Patriarchy in Lebanon

3.  In Syria, women working to reform the personal status codes and introduce a dialogue with moderate religious authorities told Jane Gabriel about the challenges they face: Syrian Women's Rights: "the fight does not stop here"
