George Papandreou

George Papandreou was foreign minister of Greece from 1999–2004. He was elected president of Greece’s PASOK party in February 2004.

Greece’s former foreign minister had taken over the leadership of Pasok a few weeks before the elections of March 2004. The party lost, removing it from power. Here he  tells openDemocracy’s Anthony Barnett of his ambitious plans to reinvent the way democratic politics is conducted at the start of his long road back. He lost the next general election in 2007 but won a convincing victory in 2009.
