Saad Eddin Ibrahim is the founder and director of the Ibn Khaldun Center for Development Studies in Cairo and a professor of sociology at the American University in Cairo. He is the author of Egypt, Islam, and Democracy (2002) and The New Arab Social Order (1982), and the co-editor of Developmentalism and Beyond (1997) and Arab Nonviolent Political Struggle in the Middle East (1990). He was jailed from 2001-2003 for his advocacy of human rights and democracy in Egypt, and in 2005 was an unofficial candidate for the Egyptian presidency.
