Among his books are Prisoners of Shangri-La: Tibetan Buddhism and the West (University of Chicago Press, 1998), (as editor) Buddhist Scriptures (Penguin, 2004), and The Madman's Middle Way: Reflections on Reality of the Tibetan Monk Gendun Chopel (University of Chicago Press, 2005).
