Jan Egeland is director of the Norwegian Institute of International Affairs (NUPI), and visiting professor at the University of Stavanger. He is former under-secretary-general for humanitarian affairs and emergency-relief coordinator at the United Nations (August 2003-December 2006). Among his books is A Billion Lives: An Eyewitness Report from the Frontlines of Humanity (Simon & Schuster, 2008)
