There are many problems in Somaliland, most aren't apparent to non-Somalis. One of those problems is that the Nugal and Sanaag regions aren't part of Somaliland (but are disputed between Puntland and Somaliland), however all the maps the "Western" media uses include these two regions in Somaliland.

Puntland has been a success as well and in terms of economy, it's the largest economy in Somalia.

I am a Somalian living in the West and I strongly believe one nation. We are one family, we speak one language, we all believe in Islam and we all have one colour. This is the mentality of the West which is to divide us and then rule us. We want our stolen regions back (The Ogaden and NFD).

An excellent article, explaining very clearly and concisely why Somaliland should be given international recognition. Of course, there are many many obstacles in the way, but at least the case is clear.

One of the biggest problems is which country(ies) should make the first moves. I am quite clear that if the EU and US showed leadership in a positive way, they could recognise Somaliland, put pressure on the African Union ot do the same. It really SHOULD be easier to get backing for recognising positive achievement in creazting and maintaining freedom and democracy and rule of law than for a war against countries which abuse these ideals. However, the woprld does not seem to work like that, which is a real shame.

A formal recognition of the self-declared independent state of Somaliland in the Horn of Africa would be just in principle and a boon to the region and the continent, says Jawahir Adam. Read the rest of this post...
