Superb reporting, as always, by Sidney Blumenthal. We hapless citizens on the Monterey/Carmel CA coast suffered the arrogance, power & inconvenience of Murdoch just a few months ago. (Murdoch maintains a private residence in a tony gated community south of Carmel). His pals Clint Eastwood & Peter Uberroth, among other owners of Pebble Beach Company welcomed Murdoch and his enormous entourage to hold a top secret conclave that included such political and show biz worthies as Arnold (whose baggage included his Humvee golf cart), Bill Clinton, Bono, Nicole Kidman and too many others to mention in this space.

Our famous Highway One was shut down routinely so Murdoch and his guests could easily navigate the drive south to the Carmel Mission for tented luxury dining rooms, no matter that locals were barred from accessing the vital highway during these jaunts to and fro. Never mind that not even Pope John Paul's visit warranted such extraordinary security and inconvenience.

Not so Jolly King Murdoch is a royal pain and one hopes now that the democrats are coming back into power the ruthless Aussie's influence here will be dimmed.

The embarrassment over his company's OJ Simpson book project illuminates the media tycoon's corrosive influence on the public realm in the United States and beyond, says Sidney Blumenthal. Read the rest of this post...
