Extraordinary times require extraordinary people.

The General was one. He saved Chile from the chaos and prolonged misery of a communist dictatorship.

RIP

I am struck by the similarity of the moral position of Pinochet apologists with that of Iraq war apologists. There is a sort of instrumentalism that hopes that "with just a few broken eggs, and it will all be OK". This tries to justify baseless invasion or torture - "we're just pushing it over the hump".

But has it ever worked - this compromising of core values in the name of promoting those values? Are there _any_ historical examples?

Augusto Pinochet's death closes an era in Chile but leaves a nation still split over the ex-dictator's legacy, reports Justin Vogler in Santiago. Read the rest of this post...
