This idea of a rennaissance is absolutley laughable. i don't understand their perception of a more culturaly developed Britain than say 5 years ago, although the varied mediums of expression are becoming more and more widely available to larger sections of society. Of course, a renaissance is more about what the movement leaves behind in terms of «great» art, rather than the flourishing of a culturally concious nation.

Damien Hirst's diamond skull is a glittering prize that is also empty. Criticising the skull for being true to the Blair Era and its morbid symptoms strikes me as really hollow. Haven't you missed the substantial point?

Todd Gitlin says:

"The mugshots are--PRICELESS.

Who is this Sir Brian? A reject from the Bush regime? 'the society we now live in is arguably the most exciting it has ever been' Take that, Billy Shakespeare! Billys Blake & Godwin!"

"Meretricious, morbid, derivative, created for the spectacle, hugely over-priced,"

Yes, but did you like it? :)

Anthony Barnett (London, OK): Britain may be about to produce "the greatest art yet created", ushering in a "new Renaissance" comparable with that in 15th century Italy, according to a policy review to be published by the government next Thursday. The Secretary of Culture James Purnell told the Guardian: "When Brian talks about the potential for a new Renaissance, I don't think that's an overstatement. It's exactly true." Who could disagree, and here is the proof:
Read the rest of this post...
