Perhaps the most astonishing thing about Iraq is that anyone could believe that invading and then occupying a nation would be accepted by those who lived there. Was it incompetence, ignorance, arrogance or a combination of the three which led the US into this deadly farce? Logic, reason and common sense, not to mention history, dictate that any people who are being Occupied will fight with any means that they have to free themselves. And they will always win because those who fight against Occupation have a moral strength to support them, and a passion for justice which will always see them stronger than those who fight an immoral and unjust war to maintain Occupation.

How many Americans would sit back and do nothing if their nation was invaded and Occupied? None I would expect. So why should anyone of sound mind have thought that the Iraqis would sit back and take it? It beggars belief. The French fought German Occupation, the English fought to the death to prevent Occupation, the American settlers fought against what they saw as unjust rule although strictly speaking it was not Occupation, the Chechens fight the Russians, the Palestinians fight the Israelis, the East Timorese and now the West Papuans fight the Indonesians.... and all used or use methods which would be defined as 'terrorist.' So what is different about the Iraqis? Nothing of course. They are doing what most human beings would do in the same situation and they will win for the simple reason that the only way the US could take victory in Iraq is through genocide... ditto for Israel actually in Palestine.... and that simply cannot happen in the modern world. Not by supposedly free and democratic nations anyway.

What can the United States salvage from the wreckage of Iraq? There’s time for a fresh policy that works, says Ian Shapiro. Read the rest of this post...
