The New Mission of the United Nations

Posts:

Most of us have heard about United Nations peacekeeping and humanitarian assistance. But the many other ways the UN affects all our lives are not always so well known. Created to maintain world peace, develop good relations between countries, promote cooperation in solving the world’s problems and encourage respect for human rights; it finds itself incapable of facing different problems in nowadays societies. We’re all questioning ourselves if the UN is capable and skilful enough to deal with various difficulties covering several issues. What is the improvement that could be undergone for these essential objectives to be truly achieved? First of all, a lot of people from all around the world are facing high levels of poverty. Nearly three billion people live on less than two dollars a day; Lack of food, absence of education and lots of degradation. Around a billion people entered the 21st century unable to read a book or sign their names when less than one per cent of the world’s armament budget is enough to educate all the children worldwide! Still talking about welfare? Spending a bit more money on helping pitiable cases worldwide and especially in Africa is needed. Build schools, educate their people, and deploy culture everywhere. Construct more hospitals and health centres. Save innocent babies affected by AIDS even before seeing African dazzling sunsets and sun-kissed prairies. Answer calls made to the poison centres regarding insects and animals bites information or treatment advice. To be precise, promote the most effective ways of teaching health living. Provide adequate food supplies, safe water and acceptable shelter to help them survive. This is a matter for serious thought, just like the Asian insufficiency! What wasn’t mentioned above isn’t to be forgotten. What about the illegal human organ trade whereby poor and sick people exploitation is taking place? The secret of the worldwide drug trade new high record, 200 million demand? Despite anti-drug measures that have restricted some supplies, the market is as insatiable as ever… In addition to that, and in relation to ecology, mankind is over-exploiting the planet's resources and therefore, living beyond its ecological means. In other words, rapid population growth and rising living standards necessitate the quick use of the global resources of farming land, forests, fish, water, air, energy etc…However, all the earth’s inhabitants are driving nature to a mysterious abyss. In parallel, our society knows that pollution, being a harmful and serious catastrophe for earth is affecting two essential aspects of our planet: air and water. Air pollution is mainly emitted by the exhaust of motor vehicles and the combustion of fossil fuels, whereas water pollution results from industrial waste and environmental accidents. Logically, those origins should have been replaced or at least reduced. But regrettably, cars are being used more and more, and toxic industrial waste amount is generally increasing…Something needs to be done about global warming and climate change! Moreover, nuclear energy being the wave of the time to come, releasing a lot less pollutants into the air than the combustion of oil and coal is on the way to disappear due to the human excessive extraction and use. Thus, I urge all the involved nations, with the collaboration of the UN to extremely help and support scientists’ researches and to accompany their promising careers, because it’s the best way to get to a new and improved technology, safer then ever. Otherwise, oil is being added to the fire. Furthermore, relating to international conflicts, numerous topics are to be discussed. To begin, racism and racial discrimination are touchy subjects for some; notably in Europe and North America. After all, we have to admit that the diversity of cultures in a relatively small area of land usually leads to conflicts, what is somehow proved throughout history. Anyhow, whoever is in charge of overseeing this matter has to be blamed. Guilty for taking no notice of what was proclaimed in a famous declaration of independence in 1776: “all men are born free and equal”. Moreover, arms trade being a major cause of human rights abuses led us to terrorism and the so-called war on terror. Effectively, small arms sales are increasing the number of hostilities, and so, civilian casualties. As a result, this global military expenditure has to be restrained! Nonetheless, what is worth immediate attention is that those who claim they are fighting global terror didn’t attend the international ban on anti-personnel landmines called by their former president in 1997. For myself, I wonder why those who hunger are not fed and those who freeze are not clothed. Why those who are innocent are said to be guilty and those who seek peace are dying in wars… To conclude, the United Nations has a new mission to accomplish and pro-active emergency plans to give rise to. I believe that the time has come for the people to wake up. The world should and must react prematurely to avoid continuous human losses and protect their future and the future of their progeny.
