Quote of the day

My students taught me that everything was personal - history, politics, foreign relations - but this approach creates boundaries as well as connections

On two occasions in the last few weeks I have typed a reply in the forums and when hitting the "submit" button found a message come up to say that I was not permitted to post as I was not logged in. Well clearly I was, because if not logged in there is no box in which to type. Not only that but, of course, it throws away all the typed work. The first of these was a substantial piece so I was extremely displeased and did not feel inclined to try to recreate it.

I know it would be best if replies were typed in Word first, or at least copied to a "cut buffer" before submitting, but when it works most of the time such precautions tend to get dropped. I have reported this to Jessica Reed but have had no response. Has anyone else suffered in a similar way?

I just sent a  post and it

I just sent a  post and it hasnt shown up yet.

edit: I found it. I didnt know that our posts show up under the ones we are replying to now. (instead of at the bottom of the thread)
Is that only with some threads and not others?

Threaded forums

Candace,
We turned on threading in the forums because of some feedback we recieved on the De Borda trial; I'd love to get some feedback from our core forum users on whether this is a good or bad thing...

Cheers,

Felix

so thats what its called :-)

It's ok other than when youre responding to comments from more than one post. The only way to do that is to use the reply box at the bottom of the page.If you want to preview your comment and need to edit, its kind of a pain to go through all the code to edit something simple.
I know theres ways around it, it just seems that this site requires extra effort (mainly time) to post, or read something recent compared to other places I've participated at.

Candace, I agree; the forums

Candace,
I agree; the forums get a bit neglected here from a design pov; if you can suggest some other places I can look for ways of doing things from, I'll be more than happy to investigate what I can do.

Feedback

Well, Felix, it took several weeks for you to respond to the thread and I never had any response to direct emails, but hey, as you said the forums are "neglected" from a design point of view. As a significant contributor I get enough pleasure from using this site and appreciate the work that goes into its maintenance. However, I think you should take more notice of those who use it on a regular basis.

My opinion about threading is that it does not help by allowing comments to a previous section of a thread. It is much simpler to have a straightforward sequential set of postings. Postings to an earlier comment show up as the last contributor but, when viewing the thread, are not immediately apparent unless you look back. Most people using the forum are interested in all the comments in the thread and not just those which respond to a previous specific post that they have made. This complication is unnecessary and confusing.

Another recent feature that seems to be confusing is that if someone edits their post they become the last poster, but, of course, when the thread is viewed they are not at the end of the thread. I can see the logic in this but would prefer the historical order to be maintained but with a note at the botom of the edited post saying when it was last edited.
