Seminar: Women & Shari’ahTalk 1: Dispelling media myths: the position of women in Shari’ahTalk 2: Why do Muslim women want Shari’ah?Panel Q & ASunday 9th March 2008, 1.30pm – 4.30pm. Toynbee Hall, 28 Commercial Street, London E1 6LS (Nearest tube, Aldgate East) Women’s Association of Professionals in conjunction with women of Hizb-ut-TahrirWomen only eventFollowing the Archbishops’s recent comments, the media myths have yet again been stirred by opportunists in order to defame Islam. The outdated accusations are yet again being debated regarding the position of women in Islam and whether the Shari’ah has a right to exist in the modern age. It is therefore imperative for the Muslim community to carry a unified response in such a climate, especially with respect to the attack on the role and position of women in shari’ah. It is historically known that Muslim women thrived and excelled under the Caliphate which implemented shari’ah law. But has the current situation of Muslim women (without the Caliphate) under capitalism in the west, imported secularism in the Muslim countries or the ‘pseudo’ Islamic states brought the Muslim woman more happiness and prosperity? What are Muslim women calling for? This seminar wishes to dispel myths, created dialogue and to answer the burning question: Why do Muslim women want shari’ah in the Muslim world?
