The careless and incompetent moderation of this forum by BC

I posted an article here I titled "Afghanistan - military intelligence, disasters & strategy"

and it contained a long original analysis and comment by myself.

My post also contained some long quotes from a couple of articles which were removed by a moderator here.

[Excerpt deleted - we can quote small passages (a sentence or two) for the sake of  discussion but  this is way beyond what is allowed - BC]

However, not only were my quotes removed, the whole long original analysis and comment by myself was also removed at the same time.

So there is nothing left.

BC removed my whole comment and left nothing.

Did BC not take care to note what was my comment and what was quote, and just deleted the lot?

This is careless editing and moderating and frankly it ruins this forum for me.

Would it be possible to have BC removed from the power to moderate my posts and have someone competent moderating, who if they delete long quotes, at least do not remove my original comments at the same time?

He probably acted correctly. This site is based in the UK and is subject to UK Copyright Law. According to the law you can only quote very limited amounts of text from other publications without breaching the rights of the copyright holder. There is an idea on the internet that you can 'cut & paste' what you like and that infringing copyright is OK. It isn't.

Your 'some long quotes from a couple of articles' breached copyright law, and so the moderator had no choice but to remove the piece. They have not got the time to minutely read and edit every post so they comply with the Law. I would suggest you rewrite your post so it complies with UK Copyright Law.

However, not only were my quotes removed, the whole long original analysis and comment by myself was also removed at the same time.”

Next time you should mark your own text with “this bit wasn’t lifted from another site, it’s by me!”. It would make deleting the rest easier for the moderators. Or, even better, you could refrain from infringing copyright, which would make the moderators’ task really easy.

Nobody reads posts of that length anyway. One skims through them.

Thank you for your support Momo and Owly.  I'm sorry I had to delete your post Peter.  I don't recall what it was about now but I do remember regretting that it had to go.  As has already been said, I'm afraid I do not have the time to finely edit.  We are more than happy to hear your views but both copyright law and the rules of the site dictate what can and cannot be posted.

Peter,

In the future, perhaps if you used the quotation functions...

like this to make copywrited quotations more obvious,

moderators can do your postings more justice.  We are here to facilitate discussion, not to inhibit it.  But we also have to respect the law.
