Bring on the Nanny State!

Came across a brief article (excerpt below) by Jonah Goldberg on his new book that seems to be driving Liberals nuts. In fact, there have been reports of Amazon's website being hacked to change subtitles to the book as well as reports of the books being moved to inconspicuous parts of bookstores to discourage sales. More fascist tactics? If liberal thought is so liberal, why is Goldberg's book so threatening?

KA Dilday is a LIAR!

The LIE: From his article "Iraqis Adrift" Although the United States started the war by claiming it was seeking to disarm Saddam Hussein, the Bush administration quickly shifted its stated aims to humanitarian ones; the war would create a better life for Iraqis. Bush's humnitarian goals were clearly stated from well before the war, as this excerpt from the conclusion of his UN speech demonstrates: Events can turn in one of two ways. If we fail to act in the face of danger, the people of Iraq will continue to live in brutal submission. The regime will have new power to bully and dominate and conquer its neighbours, condemning the Middle East to more years of bloodshed and fear.

Prosperity Shock.... IRELAND by Maura Stephens

It is a very damning view alrite, of what Ireland has seemily begun to morph into, but to be honest to us that live there day to day, it really is hard to take this account 100% seriously. A lot of what you read is true to a degree, but some points must be cleared up. You see the first thing you feel when reading this article is a romantic view of somewhere, as a lot of people have of Ireland generally as a place, tho more especially those that have started off life on our beautiful island or have ancestry, but this romance that you feel in this particular story, has also been taken away by the last 2 trips to Ireland. That bit is clear. Though change doesnt happen overnight, it is gradual, and the change in Ireland has been very gradual up to ten years ago, then it accellerated, but in reality it hasn't just happened in the past "celtic tiger" infleunced decade. It started way before that.

Edward Said - rejection of a global village?

Hi, I'm currently writing my dissertation, and focusing on the question of whether the emergence of a global village is possible. Having looked at some of Said's work, it is obvious to me that he would reject the notion of a global village because of how the Orient has been created, and the subsequent effects this has had on the current global-politics. Also, I believe Said would reject the notion of a village becaue of how the Orient is viewed as so different to the West that it could never view itself as a member of the village. What i would like to know is if where the best places to look for qoutes to support this argument would be. Any help would be welcome!

Holiday shopping

I read this article with great interest as this is something I've been thinking more and more about this holiday season as the right-wing in the US declares its war on the "war on Christmas." It strikes me as sad, among other emotions, that this is the focus of the controlling political party...the semantics of holiday greetings rather than the stark reality of poverty in this country and others and the power that our "christmas" dollars could have over recent tragedies and relieving the pain of those both near and far. Toy drives, in concept, are great...they make us feel nice, and we make Christmas morning happy for some needy child, but in my mind, it begs a bigger question in what we are creating...more consumers, rather than addressing more important issues. Consumerism is really waging a greater, and far more successful war on Christmas than any "politically correct" retailer. Additionally, while I appreciate the effort of the Salvation Army bell ringers...their discriminatory policies prevent me from giving them money at this time, or any other. However, charity or tzedakah, is a requirement of the Jewish religion. We are asked to give and then give again, and not, as with tidings, to the church or temple, but to others who are more needy. The opportunities for giving at this time of year are as bountiful as any Christmas table hopes to be, but the publicity for these charities is as non-existent as the hanukkah section at most major retailers. Retailers, who as corporate machines, have the ability to inundate us with psuedo-cheer in the form of buying and spending and giving...without celebrity, very few charities have the public relations power to convert the good feelings at this time of year to money.

A New plan for Iraq

Maura Stevens New Plan for Iraq is a good outline for positive action. I would add two more points: 1) build democracy from the bottom up, empowering local villages, communities and towns to become self reliant. Nepal has a Panchayyat system, whereby five families put up a representative, and five of these put forward a representative, and so on until they have access to Government. 2) use this structure to build an ecological economy, concentrating on provision of water, food, shelter energy and waste management. Pouring attention and energy into this constructive effort will divert energ

Judith Miller's Race: The Unasked Question

Thanks to KA Dilday for an interesting article. I found your dissatisfaction with Black History Month intriguing. I tend to believe that when ideas such as this become toys of the corporate world - in other words, absolutely safe and uncontroversial - it may be a hint that their time has past as a purposeful tool. While it may be uncomfortable, it may also not be such a bad thing. Wasn't the point of having Black History Month in the first instance to make the United States a more accepting, educated place? When corporations and institutions embrace such a thing, it's a sure sign that it's accepted by the country in general. I work for a large law firm, and as I'm sure you know, large corporate institutions do not put official stamps on ANYTHING controversial. While some of the beauty and power may be stripped from the month because of corporate sponsorship (just like it is from Christmas, Easter, or any other mainstream "holiday",) it strikes me as more an unpleasant side effect of the success of the civil rights movement than it does a betrayal of it.
