Still waiting for justice

After the images of Saddam's hanging are broadcast across the world, mine, like many Iraqi families who have lost loved ones to the Saddam regime, are still waiting for justice. The justice we have been waiting for is the sight of an Iraq void of the remnants of the Saddam regime. And yet, Saddam's very executioners would turn into equally terrible monsters at the slightest chance. That was only too evident in their lack of humanity. One more thing - the reporting of "sectarian" violence and "Sunni grief" at the execution is terrible. Awful. And anyone who falls for it is a fool. Iraqis lived together for centuries without killing each other, married across sects and worked together. This reporting, fuelled by the BBC, gives the perfect excuse for failure - once released from the iron fist, Iraqis took the first opportunity to kill each other, Sunnis versus Shiites. It is rubbish reporting that has become "truth" and taken as fact, without anyone questioning why, then, there are bombings in mixed areas and who is fuelling the sectarian identity. Please stop! openDemocracy should know better.

Nancy Pelosi - Bush's new best friend?

The Democrats re-take Congress and threaten to cut off Bush's Iraq funding. Then (in today's UK "Observer") Bush announces a radical new plan to, er, spend more money (and lives) in Iraq. If Congress give him the money, Bush's standing in the US over Iraq could hardly get worse, so what has he got to lose? If, however, Congress refuses him the money, Bush can then scapegoat them for Iraq forever after: "I could have solved it, but for the Democrats in Congress." Echoing the Rumsfeld/Perle logic that what really went wrong in Iraq was the liberals wouldn't let them go straight on to Syria, Tehran, the Moon, etc.

In Irak have dead 15,000 US soldiers, not 2805

In Irak have dead 15,000 US soldiers, not 2805. Just ask the mothers of the deads and you will see. biside think about: in a prouch there are 50 attacks with bomb a day against US soldiers. Thet say 40-50 people die, and 32 wounded, for example. but they don`t say of "wich side" 450,0000 Irakis die in a semestre, ?and only 100- 140 US soldiers? They say 20,000.. wounded, but don`t say who lives afterward. if you want something more concret ask the mothers of the US soldiers deads.

Stop arguing about numbers

As an Iraqi, i find the whole debate regarding the number of Iraqi deaths hugely offensive as it implies that there is an acceptable number.

Dumbsfeld is a lying machine, lie face, lying liar

Would somebody hang Dumbsfeld? He lied through and through. the outcome: Iraqis and American soldiers had to pay the ultimate price..proof:I just watched on the news where Rummy lied through his teeth front of everybody. He was saying he knew where WMD were hidden(I think I have the site, if anybody want to see it)....the idiots front of him started to clap, pretending(not too sure about pretending, maybe they didn't even realize, pretending could be one of the option anyway) that he is telling the truth. When questioned by CIA analyst, Rummy then tried what he does best, twisting words, over and over again.

Can Iraq Avoid Civil War

President Bush Blames Saddam for Violence in Iraq. Dick Cheney Denies that Iraq is heading towards a bloody and messy civil war.Condoleeza Rice has been pressurising the Iraqis to form a government of national unity and no one is listening. The facts on the ground indicate otherwise. A recent poll conducted by the Washington Post-ABC News Poll revealed that most Americans believe Iraq civil war is likely. Over 70% are pessimistic about the prospects in Iraq. Nearly 60% believe the US is failing to restore order. In the Arab world there is a general consensus that civil war in Iraq is already raging on sectarian lines. Sunni insurgents are targeting Shi'ite and Kurds. Shi'ite militias are targeting Sunnis. A dozen or so Sunni Mosque Imams were murdered by Shi'ite militiamen.

We must build Iraq to love Amerians and other westerners

Although I am tortured by Chinese secret service persons of Chinese Government, I have following ideas for Iraq reconstruction. Although the Chinese secret service persons of Chinese Government are as cruel and stupid as beasts, they can cheat western countries. If I am free and not tortured by Chinese, I am sure that I will have good ideas for reconstructing Iraq. To Train and use more Iraqis to protect the security and economy of Iraq is the necessary step for America-led army to win in Iraq. If more Iraqis are trained and educated to love Americans and other western countries, the present Iraq is going to be safe place and the future Iraq people and government will loyal to the United States, the United Kingdom and other western countries.

America-led army must train and use more Iraqis

To Train and use more Iraqis to protect the security and economy of Iraq is the necessary step for America-led army to win in Iraq. If more Iraqis are trained and educated to love Americans and other western countries, the present Iraq is going to be safe place and the future Iraq people and government will loyal to the United States, the United Kingdom and other western countries. The ways to educate Iraqis include propaganda, employment, working training, favorable trade policies and so on.

An appeal to the Iraqi Mujahedin.

I am one of the many millions of people who manifested ourselves very clearly against the war on Iraq. Most of us are still convinced that it was, at best, a tragic mistake. But lamenting the fact, and wringing our hands in anguish will not get us very far. The fact is that many people have died, many are still suffering, and men of good will must concentrate on bringing the suffering and injustices that the war has engendered to an end. Both the allied soldiers and the Iraqi resistance are causing thousands of deaths of innocent people including non-combative men, women and children, an action condemned both by Islam

The end of secularism in Iraq (Let's be fair and even-handed)

I read the article by Zaid al-Ali "the end of secularism in Iraq". I do not get it why he did not draw the attention to the Sunni Islamist parties. Islamism and Islamization in Iraq is not only a Shi'i phenomenon. In fact, Sunni Islamist parties started even before the Shi'i ones. The Sunni Islamist Party started in 1950s, as the Muslim Brotherhood's wing in Iraq. In 1980s and 1990s, Sunni Wahhabi Salafi groups were imported by the Saddam regime from Saudi Arabia to counter Shi'i Islamists (later, it was crashed when it started the Saddam regime). In 2003, Muslim Clerics' Association emerged. The Association is now functioning as a political and religious cover to the insurgency. There also exist Islamists parties in Iraq's Kurdistan. However, they do not have broad political bases as the two secularist parties of Talibani and Branzani.

Iraq- the new government

The new government of Iraq has not been constructed very well. It is lacking thought as not all religious groups are represented equally. The Shiite muslims and Kurds are dominating. This has caused new uproar and is costing even more lives in Iraq. The US should have thought it out better! In the past we have seen that religious inequality has caused civil war- best ex. Lebanon in 1958Shiite, Sunnis and Druze muslims parted from Christians be it in the army, socially etc as they felt suppressed by the Christian Maronites. Another interesting aspect of the new leaders is that the Shiite prime minister etc lived in exile in Iran, so in future most probaly Iraq will have close ties to Iran- the US will not be amused, but once again the bush administration was lacking logic...

Bush's PLAN for PEACE is WORKING

I've had heard the left state repeatedly that Bush's rationale for the Iraq war keeps changing. That statement comes from the ignorant or the dishonest. Bush's plan has been consistent, and it is working. The PLAN: 2002: UN SPEECH Events can turn in one of two ways. If we fail to act in the face of danger, the people of Iraq will continue to live in brutal submission. The regime will have new power to bully and dominate and conquer its neighbors, condemning the Middle East to more years of bloodshed and fear. The regime will remain unstable -- the region will remain unstable, with little hope of freedom and isolated from the progress of our times.

Russia has won the war in Iraq

RUSSIA HAS WON! Is it just me or is everyone else being stupid? I think Russia has just won the war and before long there will be Russian troops in Iraq and Russian oil contracts. Then the US will be asked to leave and there will be nothing they can do to stop Russia winning (not just the Iraq war but also the cold war...everything) in alliance with Al Sistani and Iran. HOW IT HAPPENED. I think the US saw Iraq as a 'vacant lot' before the invasion, from which they could establish a new middle eastern base (and hence protect their oil supplies), helping to lessen dependence on the Saudis (and Israel) and challenge Iran's ambitions to become a nuclear power. But they forgot two things:

POST-ELECTION IRAQ

In reading the many commentaries about post-election Iraq there is a consistent thread of universal failure to define the "democracy" that everybody alludes to. Clearly, there is a dominance by the Howard/Blair/Bush version, which has nothing to do with democracy at all, but the imposition of a permanent US-led occupation. And even the more well-intended references are to systems whereby an elite entity makes decisions on behalf of the people. None of these are democracy. Could it not be more obvious that as long as we are all using that most pivotal of all terms, Democracy, we must have a common definition for any dialogue to be productive. And, we are not just talking about Iraq here, but the entire prospects for peace and ecological integrity on our planet.
Friday 25th February

The real outlook

Khalid JaharŽs speech is the clearest view on what Iraq became since occupation took place. Although Saddam HusseinŽs regime was among the cruelest government in the world, one must notice that he used to threat only those who were critic about his role. Democracy settled in western nations by its own people fighting for their rights; it was a continuing process rather than a "solution". People fought against tough governments at the time as well, with no will to hand out power to the masses. The same way Iraqi people should have acted in order to accomplish "regime change", but Americans didnŽt let the chance.

Iraq

It is clear that the action taken by the British in invading Iraq was not justifiable on the grounds stated at the time and may well have been illegal. That the action may have turned out to have a beneficial effect in that life in Iraq may turn out to be better than it was before does not, in itself, absolve the actors. Blair and co. cannot take credit for the outcome and in that way suggest that it amends their wrongdoing. Just as we can welcome what will we hope be better life in Iraq, there is no problem in condemning Blair , at the same time, for the way he misled the public. It is reasonable for him to be judged on what his actions did for life in britain.
