On 'An Iraqi Journalist'

It hardly seems adequate to name this person courageous in her dedication to bring information to the iraqi people. She has made a choice that many would call insane, to risk life and limb to provide crutial journalistic coverage. In the crucible that is Iraq (and the entire region for that matter)many things can be brought to life, the best that could come would be a product of the common perception. The foundations of common perceptions may indeed lie in information, much of which relies on journalistic effort. I can hear the naysayers, and indeed the journalist in this example hears derogatory rhetoric from all sides, yet carrying on she provides the vital function of an example to all.

Democratic Imperialism

Democracy is a social experiment, that has no moral justification, which is being hijacked by powerful Western interests with their own agenda, that has little to do with the principals of, one person one vote, or equal rights for all. Bush, with his rather zealous and slightly "fanatic" religious overtones, talks constantly about "evil" as if his own morality allows him to act as judge and jury for the rest of the world. Britain shamefully follows the US lead, both because of the "special relationship" (a fictional World War II hangover) and, more cunningly, because the UK is likely to be on the winning side when it comes to Iraqi reconstruction projects etc.

Where are these Iraqi voices?

I had hoped to hear from Iraqis on this thread, seeing as internet access is now possible again. They feel more connected to the world, according to Claudio von Planta's recent post. The stories direct from local Iraqis (as different from reported speech by Western journos) are going to be extremely compelling when we get to hear them. Is open Democracy capable of/willing to encourage these voices to post here?

The reality of what you say is beyond the mental scope of liberal idealists. Idealism and reality are vastly seperated in the minds of these individuals. I'll bet you wouldn't find a one of them who would give their lives for their ideals. Their ideals are the spewings of spoiled and surfeited lives. As long as they are comfortable they will continue to vomit hatred on realists, calling the motive "love". Take away the toys and the comforts afforded by the powers they reject ideally - corporate advancement - and you will hear whining and crying to make the very gods blush and cover their ears

Iraqi(all)Freedom comes with a price

Freedom and properity require good people to kill evil people. That's reality. In the process, innocent people will die. That's a terrible reality, but it cannot be changed while brutal dictators still rule much of the world. What is a greater evil: To attempt to rid the world of oppression, or to accept it?

maxmaera: I hate to admit you're right

but I'm one liberal who does find indignation (or amusement) in the stupidest things, such as any of your postings.

maxmaera: so what?

You wrote: "So what if we lend support to foreign forces that support democracy and free markets? So what?" So the anarchy in Iraq today & the rule of the warlords in Afghanistan... close window

bettyann: re hate-filled people

hate & stupidity often make great companions, as in any of your semi-literate postings. It's no wonder that you find comfort in the opinions of maxmaera! You're two of a kind though neithre of you appears to know what it is to be kind...

Which subject are you refering to? I didn't realize that all subjects are only subject to reference by those "in the know". But then, you must be a liberal. Liberals only believe free speech is the right of themselves alone. Otherwise everything else that is said is an issued opinion, one they did not formulate on their own. Particularly they don't like to hear conservative opinions. Free speech is not a right including those who utter opinions which go against the grain of socialism. You sound very smug. Perhaps that is because you believe you are in the majority - this is a gang mentality. When one believes they may only vaguely reference rather state a case, it is becuase they believe their audience is in agreement.

illusions of knowledge

once again i find a majority of posts in a topic that appear to be from free thinking individuals, but almost every topic here is just a tabloidism in some form or other. in particular, the last post by bettyann, could almost be quoting any number of tabloid reactionaries, trying to justify a point with as few actual facts as possible. you only have the illusion of knowledge about this subject, as the simplest of research would demonstrate. i find this tiresome to have to read, when you clearly have not studied this subject, and yet feel qualified to defend it.

Newboy is female, I believe. Hurray to everything you said. I am from the south. I am not black, but am from a place where blacks and whites live side by side in harmony. We had a good time making fun of one another, tongue in cheek. It is a cultural humor I miss since moving to the west. I have never seen such prejudice as that outside the south, where liberals say things they have no knowledge of. I am an American. Only an American knows what that means. I personally do not consider liberals Americans, but socialists. Socialism and Americanism are poles apart ideologically. To the socialist liberals democracy means socialism - ask them to explain it. This is not a democracy in America, it is a capitalist republic. It is the first successful of its kind in the history of mankind.

New Boy: United Statesian?

So OK, you don't like it when we refer to ourselves as Americans. OK. So, you do know that 'America' is like part of our country's name, as in "United States of America." If you don't like us to call ourselves American, would 'United Statesian' work? I don't know, it just doesn't have the same ring as 'Canadian' or 'Mexican.' But that's just me. [You pseudo liberals are worse than the extreme religious right. You find indignation in the STUPIDEST things.]

Newboy: Racism and violence

Let’s see if I can keep my cool talking about this. Where do you live, Mr. Canadian Newboy? Are you white? My mother is Japanese; my father is a black man from the south (of the United States, that is). I’m not an expert, but I’ll tell you what I think about racism. I see the lily-white pseudo liberals as a greater enemy that the white supremacists. These white supremacists hate us or want us to stay away from them. But the lily-white pseudo liberals...they speak with the tongues of serpents. They profess to be our friends, and then they hurt us. They’ve used us as their guinea pigs for their failed social programs. Take a walk, Mr. Canadian, through an urban black neighbor here in the US. Despite the BILLIONS of dollars that have been pumped into these communities, feast your eyes on the results of pseudo liberal policy making.

Newboy: American foreign policy

I think you need to get off of your morale high horse. How old are you? So what if we intervene in various countries around the world? Before WWII, Americans were isolationist. Americans tried to stay out of the WWII, but the Japanese gave us inclination to do otherwise. WWII made us rethink two things: the morality of doing nothing while watching Hitler and Tojo invade countries and slaughter millions of innocent people and how appeasement does nothing to prevent and may even encourage war coming to us. So what if we lend support to foreign forces that support democracy and free markets?

Iraq

Hey Max: Go to google and type in "rebuild Iraq jobs" and you will get a slew of info that is growing daily. I sent in several applications and resumes. Bechtel is hiring - go to www.bechtel.com and click on the announcement, they are taking applications for all positions. Or you can send a resume to staffpx@bechtel.com It's very exciting! Right now there are security concerns for civilians going over there, but over time, probably in the next two years, the number of positions open will grow steadily. If you have means of private support, there are numerous openings for volunteer work with health and food organizations, available right now.
