Ry Cooder's 'My Name is Buddy' Released March 6th

I'm jazzed by the upcoming release of Ry Cooder's first album in 2 yrs, "My Name is Buddy": http://www.richardsilverstein.com/tikun_olam/2007/01/25/ry-cooders-new-my-name-is-buddy-to-be-released-march-6th/ Ry renews the spirit by recovering for us the wonderful styles of American roots music over the past century. I've heard "Three Chords & the Truth" from the album & it's a knockout song. I hope you click on the link above & read the blog post I put together with info I gleaned on the net about the development of the record & Ry's thinking about it. Message was edited by: richards1052

imagining ourselves

Hello, My name is Heather and I am writing to you from the International Museum of Women in San Francisco. I am working on a team to promote the museums latest project entitled Imagining Ourselves. This project is a global online exhibition that features the art, essays, and music of young women and now young men who are responding to the question "what defines your generation?" This January and February we are focusing on young men from all over the world and exhibiting their artistic responses to questions about relationship, fatherhood, image and identity, and culture and conflict. Imagining Ourselves gives men a chance to share about their artwork, their views, and their experiences as part of the new generation of young men. The exhibit provides an interactive global outlet and encourages people from all over the world to speak out and take action on vital social issues. All visitors are encouraged to join the conversation on the Conversations Page.

Most Outrageous Musical Instrument

The world's most outrageous musical instrument was made in France during 1450. A long row of spikes was connected to a keyboard. Under each spike was a pig, arranged according to the pitch of its oink. - from www.intellectual-playground.com

How much did fashion influence the punk identity in britain?

Hi, I'm a student in my final year doing my dissertation. The question for my dissertation is "How much did fashion influence the punk identity in britain" and i am looking for people who used to be (or still are) punks who are willing to answer a questionnaire for me regarding this. It will be sent via email and is 10 questions. I need people who were around and experienced the era - can anyone help? Thanks, Becca

Music and Freedom of Expression

Thread has been modified seeing as the one and only person who originally responded isn't mature enough to take this seriously. So much for that. Anyhoo, I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on the relation between music and freedom of expression? For example, musicians behind the iron curtain, whether they were creating their own pieces or simply became propagandist tools so that they could continue their trade? Thanks for your thoughts.

Music and literature

Hi all I run an independent publishing company called Elastic Press, and we're interested in your thoughts on the connection between music and literature. This November we're publishing a collection of short stories which have been inspired by music, and which also contains non-fiction from songwriters whose lyrics have been inspired by literature. Contributors amongst the songwriters include JJ Burnel (Stranglers), Chris Stein (Blondie), Gary Lightbody (Snow Patrol), and Sean Mackowiak (Mercury Rev) amongst others. Writers include Marion Arnott, Andrew Humphrey, and Tim Nickels. More information about the book - titled Extended Play - can be found at www.elasticpress.com

Genre doesn't really exist

As a musician interested in lots of different types of music, I've arrived at the realization that genre - though it may seem like an obvious way of classifying music at first - is actually a counter-productive distraction from other more important aspects of the music, like the harmony, rhythm, melody, or total lack thereof. Genre's main role is for capitalists to be able to sell music more easily, but it often doesn't say anything very reflective about the music itself. Over the last tew years I've completely converted my way of thinking about music to a (relatively) genre-free mindset. Am I crazy?

Dylan's greatest track

Watching Scorsese's documentary, reading Rob Cawston's article and other academic studies, such as Greil Marcus' recent book, all seem to highlight "Like a Rolling Stone" as the definitive Dylan song. Although a fan of all Bob's work it his early "protest" songs that hold most resonance with me. My favourite dylan tracks are as follows 1) The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll 2) Girl from the North Country 3) Boots of Spanish Leather I was just wondering what other people's opinion of this is, i'd be interested to know...

Scorsese, Dylan and the Dead

In response to Rob Cawston's excellent article, I'd like to post a different reaction to Scorsese's "No Direction Home". It was a bold and clever move to frame the story of Dylan's early career around the now infamous '66 tour of Britain. Bob as the Messiah of Rock and victim of his own Judasic treachery, crucified by and crucifying a mocking crowd. The Icon and self-iconoclast coexisting beneath a heap of sweaty curls (did Dylan use curlers?) at his Calvary moment. Nice one, Martin. Dylan's story was presented as a neat 7 years of development climaxing in genius. And that is fine. What was less fine was the caption, among several, at the end of the film which read something like "Bob Dylan continued to write the odd song".

National Anthem Project

In the USA today, do minors have the right to NOT be evaluated on their singing of "The Star Spangled Banner"? MENC (Music Educators National Conference - the leading arts educators association) is focusing its energies in 2005 on The National Anthem Project, a massive campaign that advocates emphasis on one nationalistic song as the central pillar of the music subject area in American public schools. [www.nationalanthemproject.org] This "educational" project is chaired by Laura Bush with generous support from several enormous corporations and right-wing organizations. In the context of a global War on Terror, the National Anthem Project is changing the landscape of music education in the USA, and holds the potential to result in both (1) narrowing and countrifying of curriculum and (2) coercion of music students and teachers. I am interested to know more about the actual results of this campaign in various American communities, and to hear both American and international views regarding its ethical and legal implications.
