The sudden assertion of human criteria within a dehumanising framework of political manipulation can be like a flash of lightning illuminating a dark landscape

Giles Kepel: Europe's answer to Londonistan

From the article: "France was ridiculed abroad when Bernard Stasi’s commission recommended a ban on the display of all religious symbols in schools, and when the advice was implemented by law. This policy has since excited the interest of observers who note that France has the largest number of Muslims in Europe – far more even than Germany or Britain. These observers also remark that the combined results of secularism, conscious integration and a preventative security policy in France – the inverse terms of multiculturalism – has meant that the country has been spared terror attacks for a decade. This has had important practical dimensions. When two French journalists kidnapped in Iraq were threatened with death if the law enforcing secularism in schools was not abolished, the mobilisation of the French Muslim community made a significant contribution to their release." Gee, wow, I wonder why France has some kind of immunity to bombing from Muslim terrorists. Hmm. Wow. Gee. I just can't figure it out. Really strange, huh? And why did its Muslim community mobilize so strongly to help those captured French journalists? Wow. It's a real puzzle. Why didn't Britain's Muslims mobilize to work against the murder of British hostages in Iraq? I mean, it couldn't have anything to do with the fact that France opposed the invasion of Iraq while Britain was Bush's biggest ally of course. Nah! Totally irrelevant. So much hand-wringing and discussion over what to do about British Muslims to prevent terrorism when the obvious is staring you people right in the face. Hello??? Iraq anybody? Why wasn't Britain a target of Muslim terrorism before Iraq? Why wasn't Spain? If these terrorists hate western secular values so much, why aren't Sweden, Switzlerand, Iceland, Ireland, Finland, New Zealand, Canada, Germany, Greece, Austria, Luxembourg, Belgium, the Netherlands, Norway been attacked? Why are Denmark and Italy the new targets (according to certain radical Muslim sites)? Couldn't have anything to do with the fact that they're part of Bush's Iraq coalition, right?
