Quote of the day

The sudden assertion of human criteria within a dehumanising framework of political manipulation can be like a flash of lightning illuminating a dark landscape

Hunting is wrong?

That is the most absurd statement I have ever heard. If the Eskimos (pardon the generalization) could not hunt, they would all die. There's compassion for you. REAL hunters hunt for meat. They track and kill quickly and use every part of the animal. I won't deny there are "pleasure hunters", but there are those who do not simply hunt for the thrill of it, and who DO eat what they kill. There is nothing wrong with that, it is natural. There are too many people out there who are so anxious to take away everyone else's rights and freedoms. "Oh but it s for their own good!" Bullshit. I know everyone has the right to voice their opinion, but they do NOT have the right to tell other people how to live and what to do. Mike

For the most part, I agree with you, and I am one of those animal-rights people. Hi. :) I don't deny that had mankind not hunted, we probably wouldn't be where we are now. The point is, that now we, humans, (for the most part), do not need to hunt for sustenance, for survival, and that is why it should stop, at least for those who do not depend on it for food. Hunting is unnecessary killing. It's a killing we can stop. On the other hand, I think that if killing a human is illegal, killing an animal should be, too. There are laws and regulations concerning the treatment of domesticated animals; why not wild? How are they any different? How are we any different from them?

dryad, quote: "Hunting is unnecessary killing." Wrong. In many instances, hunting is the only effective means of keeping populations in balance with their habitat. Prey species evolved in a system which dictated they have lots of offspring to replace those members of the species which were eaten by preators (including man, for the last 4.5 million years). If you remove man from the list of predators in an ecosystem, those species can overpopulate to their own detriment. Hunting IS necessary. If it were not for hunters taking millions of deer every year in North America, keeping the populations under control, it would be impossible to feed people. Farmers would not be able to grow a crop, cars would hit deer every 100 yards, and people would die on the highways in unbelievable numbers.

The only problem I see with hunting is the possibility of getting a load of birdshot in your face because your sinister, senescent hunting partner had the sun in his eyes and didn't bother to check where he was firing. But really, what are the odds of that happening??

Hundreds are injured in hunting accidents every year, and that's just people. Livestock, dogs, etc. are killed, or injured in traps.

More people die playing high school sports than in hunting accidents. Hunting is one of the safest sports around. Certainly there are accidents. But that does not mean hunting is not safe.

Mike, "There are too many people out there who are so anxious to take away everyone else's rights and freedoms. "Oh but it s for their own good!" Bullshit. I know everyone has the right to voice their opinion, but they do NOT have the right to tell other people how to live and what to do." Well said - Of course, it's unthinkable to tell an Eskimo that 'Hunting is wrong', but animal rights activists consider such things all the time. Imagine telling Kenyan villagers who live in the Serengeti region that 'Hunting is wrong', again, many would die of starvation, but I suppose this is what the anti-hunters would like to see - less people and more animals.

Correct me if I am mistaken, but are you not inflicting your view on defenceless (Yes, defenceless to hunting humans)? Now, I am not saying that hunting out of neccessity of survival is not right, only stating a moral contradiction in your arguement.
