Why partner with openDemocracy?
openDemocracy is committed to human rights and democracy. We believe that there is an urgent need for a global culture of views and want to play our part in facilitating this global conversation and making it accessible to all.
Partnering with openDemocracy is a way of joining in and furthering our project of openness, investigation and public exchange about the world and the way in which we govern ourselves. If you are holding an event, such as a conference or a seminar, we can provide publicity ahead of it taking place, a specially curated landing page dedicated to the event (before or after it takes place), or a network of pages aimed at keeping the issues from your debate alive for a longer period of time.
openDemocracy also hosts debates through which a series of arguments on a particular topic can unfold. These are also hosted on a dedicated page on the site.
For all of these types of partnership openDemocracy provides a progressive and influential media platform - 200K unique visitors a month, and over 15K Facebook fans, and 13K Twitter followers. We are widely read by media, academic and policy audiences
We're interested in exploring possibilities with you, so feel free to contact our Publisher, Andrew Hyde on info@opendemocracy.net, even if your idea for a partnership does not quite fit within the categories described below.
If you are holding a conference or any other kind event you can partner with openDemocracy to further the impact of your event and to keep the issues alive after it has taken place. Partnerships can range from pre-event publicity (Band 1) to help boost the profile of your event through the openDemocracy media channels, to a dedicated landing page curated before, during or after a conference or an event (Band 2) to a long-lasting feature on the site with openDemocracy providing editorial consultation to keep the issues from that conference or event alive (Band 3). These bands of partnerships are not intended to be mutually exclusive - a partnership may start with at Band 1 (pre-event publicity) and move on to Bands 2 or 3 as the relationship develops.

Another type of partnership that we offer is a debate hosted on the openDemocracy website. A debate is a way of introducing an unfolding series of arguments focused on a particular subject area into the openDemocracy publishing stream.
A debate would typically consist of a series of 'lead and respond' articles published on a weekly basis:
- - An article led by an author who is an expert in the field, outlining an argument
- - The article would unfold over the course of that week to include responses to this lead argument from other experts in the field
- - The lead author would then answer the responses
The following week a new 'lead and respond' article on the subject would be published. As well as being published into the stream on www.opendemocracy.net the debate articles would be housed on a special landing page curated by openDemocracy. As with everything published in openDemocracy, these articles would also be open to comments from our readers.
A debate would have to be run by an editor. We are open to discuss different ideas, but we consider two different editorial models labelled Band 4 and Band 5. In Band 4 the partner appoints and funds an editor, who is responsible for commissioning and editing each lead article and the responses to it. openDemocracy would sign off on the project, provide publishing space and support as well general advice on developing the debate. In Band 5 openDemocracy would provide direct editorial input, which could involve editing articles that are commissioned by the partner or involvement in the commissioning process itself.
COST would vary depending upon on the duration of the project and the editorial services needed. Contact us at info@opendemocracy.net to discuss your ideas with us.
