Matt O'Connor and English Democrats part ways

25 - 04 - 2008
delicious | digg | reddit | newsvine | furl | google | yahoo | technorati | diigolet

Guy Aitchison (London, OK): Matt O' Connor, the 41 year old founder of Fathers 4 Justice, has apparently stepped down from the London Mayoral election which he'd been contesting as a candidate for the English Democrats. On his website O'Connor blames the lack of financial support from the party and the fact he "had a clear vision to raise the issue of an English Parliament which they didn’t share." Weird. I thought this was exactly the kind of issue the English Democrats wanted to share. Indeed, OK has spent the last few days discussing whether their "Make Jock Strapped" adverts were racist. The ED website is no help, still urging you to "vote O'Connor '08". Is this an example of the poor party organisation O'Connor blames for his decision to step down?

Either way, fear not. Matt hasn't abandoned the cause of England but promises to return to "launch a new campaign for England this year." In the meantime let's take the opportunity to hear some stirring rhetoric from the man himself in this slickly edited election broadcast. Some have cruelly suggested that Matt looks "less like a prospective mayor and more like a camp funky house DJ from Essex"; while others believe the video attempts to "resemble will.i.am’s homage to Barack Obama 'Yes We Can'" but ends up "looking more like “Careless Whisper” by George Michael". In the end I guess many were simply bemused by his relentless focus on Scotland in a campaign to become mayor of London. Anyway, judge for yourselves...

Come on lets be honest, Matt O’Connor was, is and always will be an egomaniac. What won’t he do to get and keep his name in lights? First it was F4J and his exploitation of disenfranchised fathers all of whom once he had his fill he deserted, all that is bar the very few so enamoured and entranced by him they refuse to realize his wilful manipulation of their needs the like of which he exploits by having them draw attention to his one and only cause namely himself by way of protest. Not surprising is it then that upon putting his name up for London Mayor so out he brings his minions as fall guys to highlight the one and only namely O'Connor! Please Matt please don’t try and kid us anymore that your for fathers or any other cause, if so then its high time you yourself climbed a crane or Buck Palace instead of standing in front of a media camera whilst others sacrifice all.

O’Connor pulls out of mayor race:

Explaining his decision to stop campaigning with less than a week to go before polling day, Mr. O’Connor said “he had been unhappy with the lack of coverage he was getting from the media”. Just as expected and due to his hunger for media attention at long last his past exploitation of the underdog has finally caught up with him, as for the financial aspect, ex F4J members know only to well how they were duped. Time now Matt to put your own house in order before messing up the lives of others as indeed you did do with F4J.

It is obvious that O'Connor hit the brick wall of censorship on all things to with English home rule.

The English Democrats face an almost total media blackout which by default the general public never get to know about.

Maybe O'Connor promised much raising the English Democrats' profile, failed and is now blaming the party.

A typical case in how the media censors all things English is how the English Democrats campaign in the 2007 Welsh Assembly elections to return Monmouthshire to England received zero reports in the mainstream media. However, two spurious polls in Berwick Upon Tweed and this week in Audlem, Cheshire received full coverage.

Politics is a dirty game and is driven by the media which are more worthy of the former Eastern Bloc than a free mature democracy.

O'Connor will fade into obscurity now whereas the English Democrats will soldier on because it has people who campaign tirelessly for England.

"It is obvious that O’Connor hit the brick wall of censorship on all things to with English home rule."

The EDs didn't get any coverage just like other minority parties like Christian Voice, Veritas or the Respect Party because most English people see them as irrelevant. I don't think irrelevance can be considered censorship.

With the enormous interest in Englishness in UK newspapers like the Daily Telegraph and Daily Mail, the home rule issue would already have made headlines if people were interested. But they are not, perhaps they have more important things like the economy to worry about.

I always thought it was strange for English nationalists to campaign in Wales. Shouldn't they be here in England campaigning instead? What relevance did they have for Welsh people living in Monmouthshire except to show themselves to the Welsh as shameless landgrabbers? Wasn't this just a waste of campaign money when they could have been campaigning in England for our votes.

If English Democrats campaigned in England on real issues rather than on gimmicks and scapegoating then they might get somewhere.

"It is obvious that O’Connor hit the brick wall of censorship on all things to with English home rule."

Or maybe, in much more simple terms, he didn't belong to any of the three main parties. I notice that none of the others got much coverage, whatever their views were.

"A typical case in how the media censors all things English is how the English Democrats campaign in the 2007 Welsh Assembly elections to return Monmouthshire to England received zero reports in the mainstream media."

However, the bog standard vote of the EDs in Monmouthshire were reported, along with the other votes on the election website. You can see them there.

It would be nice if the English Democrats actually did "soldier for England", instead of blaming their neighbours for everything. When are they going to cease being a British nationalist/unionist party and become a real English nationalist party of the kind that Billy Bragg has proposed?

Richard, your comments about Matt O'Connor and F4J are spot on according to a website article I found via Google, titled Fathers4judas

Two statements which brilliantly sum up all that is wrong with the English Democrats, but are Robin Tilbrook and co. listening?

PRESS RELEASE

25 April 2008

For immediate release

Matt O'Connor's 'resignation' as London Mayoral Candidate

Robin Tilbrook, the Chairman of the English Democrats said:- "I am obviously very disappointed that Matt O'Connor has issued this statement but I have to admit, not entirely surprised. What I now say is in sorrow, because Matt has done the cause some good but, contrary to what he now claims, Matt approached the English Democrats Party to be our mayoral candidate. In January he came to our National Council meeting in Leicester to urge us to select him and promised to "give the campaign 110%"!

During several discussions, he was made fully aware of the problems confronting a candidate for a smaller political party which is challenging the Establishment Parties - not least the problem of raising sufficient funds to fight an election campaign especially given the lack of coverage of non Establishment candidates.

Within the bounds of our limited manpower and financial resources, Matt has been given 100% support by the English Democrats and our members who have campaigned for him, and England's cause, day in day out for many weeks and who have paid for everything that has been done. At no time has any funds been received from Matt.

Unfortunately - and this is not a subject I would have wanted to air publicly had it not been for the statement released by Matt O'Connor this morning seeking to blame us - it became apparent that there were problems with Matt's candidacy arising from his own personal problems, not least following his disappearance from the campaign for several days, to the extent that I advised him to seek professional counselling regarding alcohol abuse, which he did. Matt did not disclose this problem to us when he urged us to select him as our candidate.

Despite this counselling, Matt again went missing last Saturday; - neither his office nor his partner seemed to know of his whereabouts and he could not be contacted at home. Indeed the Party prepared a statement last night raising concerns at his disappearance, as we were becoming genuinely worried for his safety.

Now, he has stated that he has resigned, although he cannot, of course, at this late stage, remove his name from the ballot paper.

This is all a great pity for Matt personally - he obviously has personal issues that he needs to address - but it also a pity for English Democrats' candidates standing for the London Assembly - of which we have a full slate. Their campaign is running well and we have great hopes of getting a candidate elected, particularly on the party list, to campaign against the Establishment's discrimination against London and England. The campaign for fair spending for London, an end to the Tartan Taxes, and real democracy and freedom of speech, will go on.

So I urge the people of London to give their vote, particularly their list vote, to the English Democrats. England's cause is far bigger and more important than any one individual!"

Well, the EDs are a bit too paranoid Guy. Yes there is a block over the English question when it comes to the Beeb, but you have to balance this against the lack of coverage that the Greens have got - and they're a far bigger party in England than the EDs. The BNP get a lot of coverage, but for the wrong reasons.

O'Connor can't get his own way, realise's he's picked a loser and throws his toys out of the pram... well, well there' s a surprise!

It is amazing what this man has got away with, perhaps prior to selection the English Democrats should have asked the hundreds of Fathers and donators to F4J their views on the man and as to what happened to all the money, before selecting a self promoting man who is only looking for further ways to enhance his book, film, bank account and ego... and as for the you tube video ... get me a bucket, please who would want to vote for that! One deposit lost methinks.

It occurred to me that an American reader reading this who wasn't too up to speed on UK poitiics might assume that the English Democrats were one of the two main parties here.

God help us....

I have now experienced how Matt O'Connor operates first hand.

Unfortunately for him, I do not react well to threats, being bullied or lied to.

This blog has all the evidence - make up your own minds........
