Syria has "hit-list" in LebanonPosts: Joined: 2005-03-15
If you have read the herald tribune today you must have come across the news that syria actually has a "hit-list" for popular lebanese people. The US pointed this out. There is a high chance of this being true as it is quiet suspicious that in a very short time two major lebanese figures who were anti- syrian were killed. First Rafik Hariri and now the Jounalist Samir Kassir.
On the other hand this could also be another trick by the US (hi im just listing pro and contra- for all those who are going to jump up my throat!) As we know Syria and Iran are referred to be part of the "axis of evil" and I think it is a possibilty to finally continue the "war on terror".
I think that Syria definitly do want to burn out liberal lebanese as they want the control- there are somr pro syrian parties like the Hezabollah or the one in power right now. However the syrians are unpopular everywhere in lebanon and other countries at this point in time. Maybe the syrians believe that by killing all those anti-syrian important influences lebanese people gona get scared, just like the sunni people were scared to vote in Iraq. But hi this went the whole wrong way because now even more lebanese people are going to vote!

Dear Pupri,
I havent heard about that, Ill have to try to find out first, Im not familiar with whats going on in syria. I do know that the hesbollah hate us americans though. If you have some resources I could track down, Id appreciate it. Right now, Im still learning about the westphalia doctrine (well the thirty year war anyways, havent found the doctrine yet, and owly hasnt replied to give me better directions yet!)
I will try to get more current.

Pupri,
Syria would make an interesting discussion. They are the spoiler in the Mideast. They have supported Hamas in Lebanon and at home which has kept the Isreali-Palestinian conflict ongoing. At the same time, Syria is allowing its' territory to be used as training centers for terrorists. MEMRITV has televised numerous confessions of captured terrorists confessing that they were trained in Syrian base camps to knife unarmed Iraqis . They start out on animals. They are paid a $200 bounty by Syrian intelligence agents for every unarmed Iraqi they kidnap off the street and "slaughter" (their word, not mine). If they kill 10 people, they can move up the terrorist corporate ladder and become an executive-- I mean "emir"--with their own crew of thugs and EARN $1500 per month.
Re: Syria has "hit-list" in Lebanon
Ttyy,
Yes i know that Syrians have terrorist bases, o ya i also heard about the kidnapping Iraqi thing, but now I was wondering what do Syria and Iran have so much in common? Do you know more about tht?
Because I haven't heard of any terrorist bases in Iran.. But an intersting thing I have heard from several Iraqis is that they call Khomeni the father of terrorism. That could actually be justified because he did say some really messed up stuff..
But I don't get why no one is getting concerned about Jordan, there are several terrorist bases and also the remaining Baath Party people from Iraq are gone in hiding in Jordan!
Joanna,
I will come back to that I first have to find all my info again lol

Re: Syria has "hit-list" in Lebanon & The Treaty of Westphalia
Joeanna,
When Owly and others talk about Westphalia, they are referring to an unofficial doctrine (i.e. it was not written out in the treaty per se) that while States clearly have the right to go to war with each other over foreign policy issues, States should in general not interfere in the internal affairs of other States.
The reason for this was basically the wars over religion (starting with Martin Luther in the 1520s and culminating in the Thirty Years War, which devastated central Europe in the early-17th century). At the same time, the idea of the modern State took hold, where the old medieval outlook of States being mere dynastic holdings were replaced with the idea of the State being something more than the King and his holdings. It is a complex issue, but any good survey of European history ought to explain it in enough detail. Wikipedia is always good.
Whether or not anyone ever followed such a doctrine is another story. Like everything in history, and real life, it is a lot more complicated than simple black and white issues.

Dear Tim,
Thanks for the infor, I did read the whole thirty year war in three phases, which briefly made mention to Napoleans brother, which I would like to follow up, but hadnt gotten to the actual conclusion to what how they settled it all in details.
And yes, there is no such thing as just black and white, their is a myriad shades of grey.

No, there is *no* mention of Napoleon's brother in the Thirty Years War, if only because Napoleon and his brother were born 120 years after!
