Pre-moderated posts; anonymous users can post

Hi,

We're experimenting with a new forum flow - all posts will be pre-moderated and anonymous users can post.

So you won't see your post appear immediately on the forum.

We're doing this because we're having some trouble with our user sign-up module. Until that's fixed, we'll be using this flow.

If you would like to become a community moderator --- someone who can go into the queue of posts and comments and approve or disapprove posts, please send me an email explaining why you'd like this responsibility and how many hours per week you could put into it.

The Evolution of Evil

Perhaps a global political apocalypse has already arrived.

Activists and dissidents should understand that evil forces and tyrannical governments have evolved. Just as human knowledge and science expand, so do the strategies and instruments used by rulers, elites and plutocrats. By learning from history and using new technology they have smarter tools of tyranny. The best ones prevent uprisings, revolutions and political reforms. Rather than violently destroy rebellious movements, they let them survive as marginalized and ineffective efforts that divert and sap the energy of nonconformist and rebellious thinkers. Real revolution remains an energy-draining dream, as evil forces thrive.

Europe's Asylum Crisis: Pinochet's Last Laugh

I am a Human Rights advocate and the legal representative of a refugee from the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

He entered the UK in October 2001 and claimed asylum the following day. His application was considered in March 2002 and was refused. His appeal was heard in September 2002 and was unsuccessful.

In 2003, my client’s wife fled the DRC with their 3 children to France and applied for asylum there. However, before her application could be decided, she left France for the UK to be with her husband. In May 2004, she gave birth to their fourth child in a Bristol hospital. At approximately 3 a.m. on 29 November 2004, police burst into their flat. They bundled my client’s wife and their four children into one car and sent her back to France. My client was taken away in a second car and was placed in custody pending his forcible removal to the DRC.

Thanksgiving - thanks for what?-VENUE CHANGE

CLUB NIGHT, 22 November: Thanksgiving - thanks for what? Whether it be questions about the president and his foreign policy, the dominance of Hollywood in our cinemas, the burgers and fries that make us all too fat, or the fact that Americans around the world just seem to talk so loud – it isn’t often these days that America is mentioned without a bit of a sneer. But America is also the 'Land of the Free' – the first great modern republic and the inspirer of revolution, a great economic power built on immigration, a dominant force in world culture and an artistic powerhouse. The next Manifesto Club Club Night is a chance to celebrate Thanksgiving – that time of the year when Americans eat turkey and mash and give thanks to the founding fathers. But in the spirit of the Manifesto Club, it’s also a time for some critical thinking: Thanksgiving – thanks for what?

Trade Blocs and such...

I'm a student doing a little research on regional trade blocs/free trade organizations and why a state may choose not to participate in one. I was surprised to discover that not a whole lot of countries turn down participation in a trade bloc. Anyone out there know of a good example of this? I know Japan's been somewhat "iffy" about joining ASEAN or AFTA until very recently...how about with Mercosur, EU, NAFTA, GAFTA, EurAsEc?

Do You Need Shoes To Get On The Internet

There is a wide spread notion that the Internet helps us connect with people from around the globe and that we have the chance to get to know the opinions of people who have a different cultural and social experience. But is this notion really accurate? Have you wandered how many people do not wear shoes every day? My guess is: about 70% of the world's population. A billion perhaps do not wear shoes at all.It would be interesting to find out how many people, who do not wear shoes every day, have the ability and possibility to get on the Internet. Perhaps we connect with people who live in different parts of the world, but do we really connect with the opinions of those who have different social life styles, if we can't get in touch with the thoughts of those who do not wear shoes every day. I would love some day to be able to get on the Internet, talk to a native in Borneo, and ask questions about flowers, cooking, mythology, family traditions, and everything else that human beings have in common.

Is humanity in decline?

[quote] It is no longer recommended to eat fish from the ocean, because they have toxic levels of heavy metals. It is no longer recommended to stop your car in over 1/3 of the average American or European city, because crime is so out of control. It is no longer recommended to send smart children to regular schools, because the schools are designed to make dumb children feel accepted. It is no longer recommended to drink water from rivers, or to eat fruit from trees grown in the suburbs. It is no longer recommended to live in cities, because the pollution is so strong. Today, seven billion... in ten years, nine billion. The average IQ is 85-92. Each one of these people produces a bag of garbage a day, and needs food that leaves more heavy metals in the water, more pesticides and fertilizer in our waterways.

how to end elite control and save world

my dream of building a particaptory society is based on grassroots organizing through volunteering. I have planned out how this new spiritual society could replace consumerism and capitalism. We wouldn't need money, private property, or representative politics. We could create a direct democracy using the internet and give communities the control over the land. Imagine a internet based democracy where everyone can deliver the next presidential speech. This new utopia would grow their own food in gardens. Remember God gave us a Garden in the begining. If we want to save the world we must perserve it.

Boycott the 2008 Beijing Olympics抵制北京奥运会!

http://www.gopetition.com/petitions/beijing-olympics-boycott.html The invested interests spend so much national wealth in preparing the Olympic Games to blandish the international, launch so much propaganda about the 2008 Olympics to gloss over official corruption and social inequality! At the last National People's Congress session, China's Wen wowed discretionarily for the "Chinese's enthusiasm for the 2008 Olympics" - ignoring the voices of naysayers. Many feel the GDP comes from inflation. houses and food are all more expensive. China is falling into the capitalism seen in the 1800s, before the October Revolution.

The Earth dies screaming, so pass the Courvoisier

The Live Earth concerts is proof that the politics of environmentalism are rooted in middle-class hypocrisy. I have yet to see many, or any seasoned environmental campaigners fully endorse the Live Earth 'extravaganza', indeed, even openDemocracy's very own green guru Oliver Tickell concedes that the 'whole cult of celebrity can be stomach-turning'. Well, if you ask me that is putting it mildly to say the least. We all know that celebrities like Madonna are opportunistic when it comes to worth while causes, one day they are for something, the next day they drop it and move on to yet another global event or cause. Tickell also points out the glaring contradictions of A-list celebrities like Madonna telling the little people how they should live their 'carbon-neutral' lives - yeah right, Madonna.

Africa: Basket case of the World

Why is it Africa is the only place in the World where things are worse now than, lets say, 50 years ago? There is no easy, or politically correct, or univocal answear to the question. Some say it is due to the long and oppressive years of western colonialism which have stifled, even after independence, the natural evolution of African States towards improvement of their peoples' conditions. But then, what to make ot other colonized regions of the world which, after independence, improved dramatically from all points of view, even to the point of competing, in some fields, with their former colonizers (eg. India, Pakistan, Indonesia, Philippines, Hong Kong etc).

Global warming: a two word argument for doing sweet FA

The current debate surrounding global warming and climate change is enough to cause steam to come out of my ears - indeed, these days, the very mention of the words 'global warming' is more than enough to make me go out and buy a second-hand Colt 1911, with extra clips. What I really hate is the fact that when any eco-worrier utters the words 'global warming' what they really want is the whole of humanity to just stop everything it’s doing - what the greens really desire is for everything to be put on hold, or worse, to be frozen to a stand-still. For example, every time we need to build new roads, the miserable greens shout 'No - what about global warming?' Every time we need to expand our airports, again we hear 'No - what about global warming?' Every time we need new power stations, 'oh no - what about global warming'? Every time we need new desalination plants, 'err no - what about global warming'?

Steady State Economics !

The World it teaming with an excessive number of human beings.

India is suffocating in it's own waste. China is trying to raise the "standard of living" of its own citizens, while at the same time the Western powers, Japan and Australia are trying to retain and increase their domination in the field of economics. All of this is resulting not only in the "Global worming", BUT also in constand dying off of many species of plant and animal kingdoms. Natural resources are so overexploited that there are fuewer and fewer places on the globe where there are any left. All of this is the result of the MENTALITY OF GROWTH !

an introduction to the idea evolutionary democracy or Coopracy

I am brand new to the internet, I am old to the goings on in our world. We may be able to prove that the average temperatures of the earths climate are rising, but there is no way of provng that CO2 emmissions is the whole of the cause, That said what is of concern to me and should concern all of us who love our planet and put truth above politics or personal gain, is that he whole debate about how to tackle the reduction of CO2 emmissions is now it seems, owned by politicians, who are the very last people we should trust with this especialy, in Australia and America. Both countries have rather parochial in the way the do and say things, mantras are repeated and go unquestioned by gullable public.
