Pre-moderated posts; anonymous users can post

Hi,

We're experimenting with a new forum flow - all posts will be pre-moderated and anonymous users can post.

So you won't see your post appear immediately on the forum.

We're doing this because we're having some trouble with our user sign-up module. Until that's fixed, we'll be using this flow.

If you would like to become a community moderator --- someone who can go into the queue of posts and comments and approve or disapprove posts, please send me an email explaining why you'd like this responsibility and how many hours per week you could put into it.

Chashma Nuclear Power Plant" closed due to nuclear radiation leakage

30/1/2008 chashma nuclear power plant is closed due to leakage and closed in Pakistan really tragic story government is not confirming the report yet it’s just told the media it’s closed for maintenance purpose but reality and fact is that’s it’s closed due to leakage of radiation all the road going toward chashma nuclear power plant and site is closed . army troops and police is deployed and check post is placed . Why government is not telling how many people are injured due to leakage and environmental disaster and human tragedy. Who will asses the damage bcoz government is reluctant to discuss this matter we want IAE COME forward and due the safety check quickly reliable information about the accident and resulting contamination was not available to affected people for about one week now following the accident. This led to distrust and confusion about health effects. the Russian submarine has a nuclear reactor accident with radiation leakage that forces the crew to abandon ship. At Three Mile Island and Chernobyl, nuclear power plants released radioactive substances into the atmosphere during nuclear accidents Nuclear radiation can be both extremely beneficial and extremely dangerous. It just depends on how you use it. Nuclear materials (that is, substances that emit nuclear radiation) are fairly common and have found their way into our normal vocabularies in many different ways. You have probably heard (and used) many of the following terms:

Will mankind finally establish a beach head off this planet?

Anyone here paying attention to the revived thrust back out into Space? Back in 1969 the Americans landed men on the moon, then lost interest and never went back. Well , Japan and China have probes on the way to the moon and India will be launching one soon. China is planning to land a man on the moon in 2020, the same year America plans to set up a permanent habitation there. (Though I've heard damn little about that program since Bush announced it, anyone here know what's going on with that?) Considering the enormous cost of such programs I'm wondering what's behind it all?

Does the light speed Barrier exist?

According to the theory.... any particle you continuously accelerate requires more and more energy to accelerate so that as you approach relativistic velocities you need more energy to continue accelerateing up to light speed then is available in the entire Universe. It is taken as a given that the same law, for reasons I'm not sure anyone understands, also applies to forces, which have no mass. We know there is a finite limit on the speed of forces such as Radio waves, Radar wouldn't work otherwise. But what about Gravity? I'm not qualified to discuss Orbital mechanics in any depth and certainly can't calculate the orbits of planets, planets etc.

Energy-independent residential house

Harmony Between Man And Nature : SS CHAUHAN* An energy-independent residential house (`HARBEMAN house'; Harmony Between Man And Nature), incorporating sky radiation cooling, solar thermal, and photovoltaic energies was built in Sendai, Japan during July, 1996. The HARBEMAN house, which meets almost all the energy demands, including space heating and cooling, domestic hot water, electricity generated by photovoltaic cell and rainwater for standard Japanese homes. Sky radiation cooling, solar thermal/photovoltaic (PV), and underground coolness as well as rainwater and waste heat were utilized in combination. Annual variations of water temperature in the underground main tank, heating/cooling/domestic hot water demands, collected and emitted heats by the solar collector and sky radiator have been monitored.

"What Bush Said" forwarded from the "American Power & The World" discussion

In light of reading the "Weapons" and "Good Question" threads, I thought it would help if I extracted from White House docs what Bush did say...what the American people were listening to. Just because the word "imminent" was not used does not mean that the picture painted or message didn't suggest so. The widespread fear that Americans have after 9/11 was the intentional fuel used for this warhead that struck Iraq. Apologies for the length--I'll understand if this needs to be erased, nor do I mean for this to be replied to...all excerpts/direct quotes and were taken from: www.whitehouse.gov

UK Biobank publishes an Ethics and Governance Framework for comment

The UK Biobank aims to build a major resource to support a diverse range of research that will in turn improve the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of illness and the promotion of health throughout society. The project will follow the health of a large group of volunteers for many years, collecting information on environmental and lifestyle factors and linking these to medical records and biological samples. The samples will be stored so that they can be used for biochemical and genetic analysis in the future. Yesterday, the funders of the UK Biobank project - the Medical Research Council, the Wellcome Trust and Department of Health - have published for you the public to comment on a proposal for an Ethics and Governance Framework that will govern the operations of UK Biobank. The document is the first of its kind and sets new standards for consultation on ethics and governance in UK science.

Data collection of the Estonian Genome Project has spread to 12 counties

The Estonian Gene Bank receives the data - blood samples and filled-in health and genealogy questionnaires - of approximately three hundred gene donors from twelve Estonian countries a week. Four thousand people have become gene donors and about 170 doctors have been involved in the data collection process of the Genome Project. Although most of the data collectors are family doctors, specialist doctors have been gradually included in the collection of additional data as well. "The database of the Gene Bank is increasing and we have already started analysing the collected health data," noted Ms. Krista Kruuv, Chairman of the Management Board of the Estonian Genome Project Foundation. "This is necessary for ensuring the quality of the data and for developing the information technology capacity of the database. The research value of the Gene Bank is higher if it contains data of people with diverse health statuses and therefore we have launched collection of additional data about various disease groups."

In addition to my article

In the section ‘Scientific myth’ I wrote about the personal gene card that the leaders of the Estonian Gene Bank Project (EGBP) had promised to give to the potential participants. The attitude of the population with regard to the participation in the EGBP, however, is not easy to determine exactly. There are until now only two investigations on the subject and the results of them vary considerably. First of them is made by Emor. Emor, the largest full service marketing research and consulting company in Estonia, has made an investigation in order to establish the level of awareness of the EGBP and to describe the opinions of the Estonian population with regard to the project. Emor asked 500 citizens of Estonia, and according to the result of this study, 65% of them were well-informed about the project.

Glaring omissions

The timeline of WMD use on this website, is similar to the majority of such timelines available through American run websites, in that it is horribly slanted. In specific, the U.S. application of 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (the most toxic synthetic chemical in existence according to the WHO) in large quantities during the war in Indochina is not mentioned, despite the fact that it killed over a million people, ranking one of the worst WMD uses of all time. The defoliants used in Vietnam were also termed illegal by the Chemical Weapons Convention, yet their use is not on your timeline,

In response to the Skúli Sigurdsson article

To take a quote from article: “In an interview in EMBO Reports in the fall of 2001, Dr Stefánsson was quoted as saying: ‘I think that the more knowledge we have, the more opportunity we have to make intelligent choices, and the better society will be. I am absolutely convinced of that.’” I’m not sure if this is utilitarianism gone mad, sincere arrogance, or both. Dr Stefánsson quite clearly needs the guidance of ‘people from universities’ to define for him, ethically, the correct interpretation of “we”, “intelligent choices” and “better” in this statement. (I refer to the quote: “Ethics was a scholarly discipline, but now we have people from universities telling other people what they should do, which I think is dangerous. That is something that society has to do”).

Putting the facts into terror

The only quibbles I have are as follows: 1) He writes in regard to the Sarin attack in the Tokyo subway "the injured were better in a few hours." Actually, according to an Air University study "Over 5000 were injured, some receiving such severe damage to their cardiovascular system that they will ultimately die as a result of the attack. Others will survive but with lifelong effects." iraq and other paradigms

The problem is actually deeper. Western science is successful because it is a widely shared paradigm. The West, in general, can be seen as a particular paradigm. The insistutions of this paradigm refuse to accept the legitimacy of other paradigms. So for example an indigenous group that does not believe in modern medicine will be considered backward and in need of 'development'. What we need to do is figure out how our societies can function without an unthinking imposition of our own paradigm on that of others. We need to learn to allow people to live, work and unfold their own paradigms and that means accepting standards of 'fact' that we may not share.

Science and Persuasion

What's happening? Why should I be concerned about it? What can I do about it? How much? When? These practical questions for daily living are still needed for the large and complex problems of peace and the good life. When the experts disagree, we should have no opinion except how much money should be given to whom to gain agreement. When experts mostly agree, then they can and must explain it to us. This is their obligation for the huge research funds provided. How much and when are the difficult questions as these are mostly guesswork that will only become clearer with action. Whether taxpayers prefer to pay less now for a future benefit or pay more later for the same but more immediate benefit cannot be easily predicted.
