Quote of the day

The sudden assertion of human criteria within a dehumanising framework of political manipulation can be like a flash of lightning illuminating a dark landscape

The World Without Detroits and Lutons

Ann Coulter launches a spirited attack on environ-mentalists. While the text of her piece is unnecessarily emotional and at times inflammatory she has some great points. She is absolutely correct in identifying the shallowness of environ-mental thinking: They think they can live in a world of only Malibu and East Hampton -- with no Trentons or Detroits. To rephrase it for UK public: "They think they can live in a world of only Islingtons -- with no Lutons." or for Aussies out there: "world of Fitzroys with no Traralgons". She continues: It does not occur to them that someone has to manufacture the tiles and steel and glass and solar panels that go into those "eco-friendly" mansions, and someone has to truck it all to their beachfront properties, and someone else has to transport all the workers there to build it. (And then someone has to drive the fleets of trucks delivering the pachysandra and bottled water every day.) Liberals haven't the foggiest idea how the industrial world works. They act as if America could reduce its vast energy consumption by using fluorescent bulbs and driving hybrid cars rather than SUVs. They have no idea how light miraculously appears when they flick a switch or what allows them to go to the bathroom indoors in winter It is true, a lot of environ-mentalists have pretty weak idea about how industrial world functions and even weaker grasp of our energy requirements. Only fossil fuels and nuclear energy has proven potential to supply enough energy to drive our industrial societies. Perhaps environ-mentalists should be upfront and state explicitly that they want to bring about the collapse of industrial society? http://tinyurl.com/youluu
