Pity that what might be an intelligent debate on ways to solve an intractable dispute between two dangerously armed neighbours seems to be turning into a focus group on the glories of war-mongering? Perhaps we should have one on real, not make-believe Indian history and on the consequences of falsifying it.
As the Father of Modern Hindu Fundamentalism, Mr Vajpayee will have no less compunction in hurling the might of the Indian army against Pakistan than the most powerful nation on earth would have unleashing its limitless might upon a Lilliputian foe posturing as a giant. Only thoughts of incalculable consequences hold back both. They are the same sort of thoughts that held back Bush the Father when the road to Baghdad lay, ostensibly open before him. He did not wish young Americans to be sucked into the quagmire of street fighting. The very same sort of wisdom would have flashed through the mind of Indira Gandhi when she declined to “finish the job” after the Pakistani army surrendered way back in ’71. And if you want more lessons on the practicality of “driving people into the sea” take a closer look at what the vanquished terrorists are up to in Afghanistan. If you don’t want to go that far, go nearer home. Go to Kashmir and see what war does to people. It is tempting and easy to be a war monger after watching how “easy” it is on television. Real war is very different, T & R! It makes women widows, children orphans, and the able disabled. And in the war you are mongering even those wont be left alive.
As for your plan to have Americans shoot down Pakistani atom bombs the moment they are launched – a Star Wars scenario if ever there was one, just consider how easily the suicide bombers of Palestine cut through the rings of steel Israel has wound round itself these past few years. Men driven to desperation always get through. The Americans might shoot down 20 Pakistani atom bombs. Who knows that the 21st will get through strapped to the back of a suicide bomber.
Thankfully, Mr Vajpayee has shown himself to be more circumspect in his handling of the situation than India’s growing army of vituperative war mongers. Their strident appeals to the blood-lust of gormless communalism now equals if it does not exceed the frenzy of fundamentalist mullahs across the border they would demolish.
The history of Hindus in India is not ‘thousands’ of years old. It is as recent as the Aryan conquest which revisionist Hindu historians put at no more than 2,300 years. Who did India belong to before the Aryans came? For every antecedent that can be found to justify a postulate such as India was always Hindu, someone else will find a precedent to show that it wasn’t. Such a debate can come to no conclusion and is therefore futile and destructive. The Muslims who “took away” a part of India to make Pakistan arrived about 1,300 years ago and contributed as much to the “cultural achievements” Ribbentrof speaks of as any other component of the sub-continent’s multinational population. Today’s Hindu fundamentalist can no more paint out their imprint on India’s magnificent mosaic than the Muslims who tried to paint out Ashoka’s . No one can cover up the past. The truth will always out.
But Indians and Pakistanis now have the power to write out, alter even obliterate their future. The peace they will enforce will not be the peace that T & R might want. It will be the peace of the nuclear graveyard.
Shanti!

You have twisted facts, manipulated incidents and made false implications, but you still haven't made your point!
Why have a thread for your biased rant? ;-)
What you have to Realize is that Pakistan and India are in a Cold War of their own, with a few more hot spots that the U.S. and Soviet Union encountered. It is inevitable that these two countries will fight, maybe not now, but rest assure they will. Maybe non-nuclear, but certainly conventionally. If you don't take my word for it, then you'll see in the next 10 years.
Maruf..
omg it is clear that are an entbitterd paki, who is just soo sad because he has to talk soo much crap about Hindus, Indians. Well let me give you a history lesson, because either u didnt listen in history class, or u just had a twisted mind teacher or magazine which told u that crap!!
India is 5000 years old, and sanskrit is one of the ancient languages and Hinduism is also that old. Our holy sciptures The Vedas are were soo advanced, feeding the world with knowledge about surgery, mathmatics, by the way Hindus invented the Zero!!
So who are you telling the people that we were nothing before the Aryians.
You like to glorify your country is being perfect angels... and ya:As the Father of Modern Hindu Fundamentalism, Mr Vajpayeewell he is not fundamentalist, all he wants is the Indians to be proud of their country, and not always think US is better etc.. ya one should have role models but one should still be proud of their own hertiage and culture!!
lets not even get started on islamic fundamentalists the list is too long!!

Maruf,
Good article. Most objective readers will understand your arguments and valid points.
History is littered with examples of 'David & Goliath' battles - and we know where most sympathies lie.
I think the Hindu terrorists in India should continue their good work - after all, their have endeavours sown the seeds of a home-grown (violent) retaliation.
By the way, was Pythagoras a Brahmin?

You're getting boring. Don't just complain and use abusive language - tell me why you think you are right? Convince me with objective arguments.
OK. Here are some questions:
(1) Would you agree with me that the Indian army is divided as follows: Officers are mostly Hindus and Soldiers are mostly Sikhs etc? Are there any Christians or Muslims in the Indian Army?
(2) Would you agree that the good work of the BJP, Shiv Sena, etc is creating an atmosphere of peace, love and tranquility in the South Asia?
(3) Do you believe that caste system is good for India?
Now, think and reply objectively. No nonsense please.

When both parties have nuclear weapons there can be no clear victor. The loosing side with insure the M.A.D. principles and that would mean the end to (probably) +50% of the sub continent. What I do find scary is the fanatics of the Hindu's on this forum and I hope that it is not so all over India.
I myself (yes a Pakistani) always liked the way our neighborhood showed a positive interest in all those Hindu's and Siks whom wanted to see the roots of their family on our side of the boarder. We tried to make them feel welcome.. But looking at the sheer venom from our neighbours is hope that just ignoring them will ensure some peace. But then again after the terrible act of the bom blast (think it was in Bombay?) the evidence that was "found" is now not being handed over to the Pakistani gov. The feeling I get from this is that Pakistan is blamed for the internal problems of India, point at your neighbor and redirect the attention away from internal coflicts..I don't see us blaming the Indian when there is an other blowup of a bus in Karachi...
So all I ask, just keep ignoring us and work on your own problems, and no we do not want to be a part of India again. We have seen your track record with minorities and Muslims (Gujarat + the 500.000 troops in Kashmir) and would be absolutely mad if we wanted that to happen to our families. So stop putting that war machine of yours on our border, that will ensure a lower budget for the military on our side. It can for sure be better spend if we don't have to defend ourselves by fixing our muscles...
We have a high illiterate rate and poverty too and lets not forget mention the water problems due to the dams made in India (ps. and population growth). I honestly think this is a more worrying problem that your opinion regarding us. So name us a terrorist state, Muslim scum or whatever you want. but don't blame us for your internal problems!!
SO salaam / namaste(?) from your neighbour and keep on making good drama's for zee tv
