Jeremy Smith is Professor of Russian History and Politics at the University of Eastern Finland. From 1999-2010 he was Senior Lecturer in Russian History at the University of Birmingham and in 2010 was Visiting Professor of History at the University of Michigan. His most recent monograph, Red Nations: the Nationalities Experience in and after the USSR, published by Cambridge University Press in 2013, chronicles and analyses the development of non-Russian nations since 1917. He has written extensively on Soviet nationalities, the South Caucasus and Central Asia, and is now working on the breakup of the Soviet Union and its consequences.
