Camilla Toulmin chimes into the debate today. She says climate change is likely to compound already fragile conditions in much of Africa. Economic development and environmental security need to go together.

*"Large-scale, disruptive climate change threatens to be the ultimate weapon of mass destruction (WMD) for us all. There is serious evidence for it, collected by inspectors over more than a decade."*

The Director of the International Institute for Environment and Development has seven recommendations for the G8 as to what they should do. Read them [here](http://www.opendemocracy.net/debates/article-6-129-2513.jsp).

Toulmin's article comes as Prof Sir David King, who contributed [this](http://www.opendemocracy.net/debates/article-6-129-2488.jsp) to the debate last week, visits South Africa to [warn](http://www.themercury.co.za/index.php?fSectionId=283&fArticleId=2523431&ref=opendemocracy.net) that climate change is likely to be as big a challenge as malaria and HIV/Aids.
