# World environment day - pictures

For World Environment Day, which this year focusses on [cities](http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/4610761.stm?ref=opendemocracy.net), BBC online carries readers' images of climate change [here](http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/shared/spl/hi/picture%5Fgallery/05/sci%5Fnat%5Fyour%5Fchanging%5Fworld/html/1.stm?ref=opendemocracy.net).

Of course, it's scarcely possible to show "climate change" in a photo or even a group of photos. The images on the BBC site, excellent they are (and it's a shame openDemocracy's climate debate does not have the resources or capacity for something of this kind), show of pollution and environmental change or some other relatively small local effect.

Whether or not there are or can be "[icons](http://www.opendemocracy.net/blogs/page/climateChange/20050509#icons%5Fof%5Fclimate%5Fchange)" of climate change remains an open question (as the controversy of Kilimanjaro's icefields - [here](http://bprc.mps.ohio-state.edu/Icecore/TimesArticle.html?ref=opendemocracy.net) and [here](http://www.realclimate.org/index.php?p=157&ref=opendemocracy.net)) shows. [Gary Braasch](http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/shared/spl/hi/picture%5Fgallery/05/sci%5Fnat%5Fhow%5Fthe%5Fworld%5Fis%5Fchanging/html/1.stm?ref=opendemocracy.net), for one, is making a good attempt.
