# Au revoir, CPE

Jacques Chirac has announced that the French government is to [scrap](http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/4895164.stm?ref=opendemocracy.net) the controversial [CPE law](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Contrat%5Fpremi%C3%A8re%5Fembauche?ref=opendemocracy.net) that would have made it easier for employers to sack young workers, after a month of [protests](http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/4816306.stm?ref=opendemocracy.net) that saw between one and three million people take to the streets.  
  
Evidence of democracy in action, perhaps? Or maybe it's something to do with the latest [opinion polls](http://permanent.nouvelobs.com/social/20060410.OBS3553.html?ref=opendemocracy.net) that show Chirac and his prime minister Dominique de Villepin rapidly losing public support.
