The past seems to finally have caught up with Silvio Berlusconi.

Following defeats in the [local](../../../democracy-newright/sicily%5F3602.jsp) andand general elections ([just](../../../debates/article.jsp?id=3&debateId=55&articleId=3454)), his precious football toy AC Milan is now caught in the mire of [match-fixing](http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20060706.wmilan6/BNStory/Sports/OtherSports/?ref=opendemocracy.net) allegations. As if that wasn't punishment enough for his past sins an Italian judge has [ruled](http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/5159198.stm?ref=opendemocracy.net) that he must now face trial for fraud. David Mills - the estranged husband of British Culture Secretary Tessa Jowell - is set to join him.

If the Azzurri can pull through in Sunday's [World Cup final](http://sport.scotsman.com/football%5Fworldcup.cfm?id=992662006&ref=opendemocracy.net) it will not only be a triumph for their strong defence (a tactic Silvio will no doubt be employing in the weeks ahead) but a chance for Italy to wave goodbye to the [rotten](../../../democracy/december%5F3079.jsp) Berlusconi era once and for all.
