# Capital sir, capital! - Weekly environmental news stolen from the interweb.

Grist detailed this [rather interesting story](http://www.grist.org/news/daily/2007/02/26/1/index.html?ref=opendemocracy.net) of how the levers of capitalism were put to good effect to prevent a large expansion in coal-fired power plants in the US. OK, so the buyout of TXU Corp actually amounted to a much smaller expansion, which is still rather illogical, but it demonstrates that the wash of green capitalism can have some rather positive effects.  
  
Speaking of Greenwash, our man [George Monbiot](http://www.channel4.com/news/dispatches/themes/environment%5Ftheme%5Flanding.html?intcmp=docpage%5Fbox2&ref=opendemocracy.net) was on the telly last night here in the UK, speaking about it. His main targets were Government, Industry, and I hate to say it, you, you lazy bastard you. The doco itself was relatively interesting – though not new news for [Monbiofiles](http://www.monbiot.com/?ref=opendemocracy.net) (it replicated the material of many of his Guardian columns, with a touch of Monbiot the campaigner at climate demo’s). Sadly any positive helpful effects were tastelessly off-set by Channel 4 who trailed their bizarre travestamentary ‘The [Great Global Warming Swindle](http://www.channel4.com/science/microsites/G/great%5Fglobal%5Fwarming%5Fswindle/index.html?intcmp=homepage%5Fbox2&ref=opendemocracy.net)’ before and after Monbiot. Given how far we have moved in terms of scientific debate, the notion of endlessly replicating a meaningless constructed media ‘debate’ in the name of journalistic balance seems utterly and profoundly ridiculous. Sigh.  
  
In other news UK Environment Minister wants to change the meaning of the [E in EU](http://www.epolitix.com/EN/News/200703/57a6e595-ac42-41fd-9d4d-9604928d8303.htm?ref=opendemocracy.net).  
  
Polar bears will either [save us all ](http://www.nzherald.co.nz/section/2/story.cfm?c%5Fid=2&objectid=10427122&ref=opendemocracy.net)or soon it won’t just be seal blood smeared frighteningly across their muzzles…
