**By Jessica Reed**

For the past few months neo-con author Francis Fukuyama has been under the spotlight at openDemocracy: leading thinkers[ discussed and debated](../../../democracy-fukuyama/issue.jsp) the relevance of his"theory of modernisation" today - arguments which [he recently replied to](../../../democracy-fukuyama/fukuyama%5F3852.jsp). Yesterday he was Jon Steward's guest for the Daily Show, promoting his book 'America at the crossroads'. You can watch the video [here](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ejtYqpXlT08&ref=opendemocracy.net).

**Elsewhere**: Fukuyama was also involved with the think-tank [Project for a New American Century](http://www.newamericancentury.org/?ref=opendemocracy.net), and a signatory of the organisation's 1998 [letter](http://www.theindyvoice.com/pnac/?ref=opendemocracy.net) urging then-president Bill Clinton to overthrow Saddam Hussein's regime. The think-tank's spine-chilling Statement of Principles - advocating for a strong military, increased defense and a greater American leadership- can be read [here](http://www.newamericancentury.org/statementofprinciples.htm?ref=opendemocracy.net), and is signed by Paul Wolfowtiz, Donald Rumsfeld and other "hawks" alike.
