The news of violent riots in the eastern town of Andijan in Uzbekistan has had international media outlets scrambling to find on-the-ground coverage. Many international news outlets, [including the BBC](http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/asia-pacific/4549873.stm?ref=opendemocracy.net), have been unable to field correspondents any closer than Tashkent, the country's capital roughly 300 miles away. The situation means there's a lag in good coverage: the most recent reports I can find are at [msnbc](http://msnbc.msn.com/id/7837128/?ref=opendemocracy.net) and [agence france presse](http://www.afp.com/english/news/stories/050516131619.4r7lwem7.html?ref=opendemocracy.net). There's also a [gruelling collection of photographs](http://muslimuzbekistan.com/rus/rusnews/2005/05/rusnews13052005%5F0.html?ref=opendemocracy.net) from the scene, hosted at [muslimuzbekistan.net](http://www.muslimuzbekistan.com/eng/english.htm?ref=opendemocracy.net).

It is at times like this that the [Institute for War and Peace Reporting](http://www.iwpr.net/?ref=opendemocracy.net), which is dedicated to training reporters in areas of conflict, shows what it's here for. Check [here](http://www.iwpr.net/index.pl?centasia%5Fuzbekunrest.html&ref=opendemocracy.net) for eyewitness accounts as they come in. But the surprise sources have been the blogs, particularly [registan.net](http://www.registan.net/?p=5314&ref=opendemocracy.net#comments)[,](http://www.registan.net/?p=5314&ref=opendemocracy.net#comments) [scrapsofmoscow](http://scrapsofmoscow.blogspot.com/2005/05/reports-on-number-of-dead-arrested.html?ref=opendemocracy.net) (where you can find translations of the latest Russian reports) and [thinking-east.net](http://www.thinking-east.net/site/index.php?ref=opendemocracy.net), run by ex-openDemocracy star [Ben Paarman](http://www.paarmann.info/blog/archives/000170.html?ref=opendemocracy.net#more).

And whilst you're searching for the facts, don't forget there is still the truth to be found too. Our 2004 piece by [Sabine Freizer](http://www.opendemocracy.net/debates/article-3-77-1826.jsp) is a good place to start.
