France, a British commonwealth country? No, this isn't the 1st of April: according to [this Guardian article](http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk%5Fnews/story/0,,1990795,00.html?ref=opendemocracy.net), back in the 50's France briefly considered joining the United Kingdom in a "merger" which would have resulted in France having the Queen as its head of state.
