Born in Paris, where his parents fled to escape the genocide, many of [Jacques Aslanian’s](http://www.legacy-project.org/artists/display.html?ID=181&ref=opendemocracy.net) paintings reflect his preoccupation with his ethnic heritage and the themes of loss and exile. The grandparents in this work are, in his words, “Eternal immigrants, waiting in their high-rise tenement, bare feet on the oriental carpet: the only thing that links them to the land.”
