Alf Gunvald Nilsen is professor of sociology at the University of Pretoria. His research focuses on the political economy of development and democracy in the global South. His most recent book is Adivasis and the State: Subalternity and Citizenship in India’s Bhil Heartland (Cambridge University Press).
