Alvaro de Vasconcelos, Chevalier of the Order of the Légion d’Honneur (France), and a Comendador do Ordem do Rio Branco (Brazil), is a prolific writer, author and columnist in the Portuguese and international press. His last book 25 de Abril no Futuro da Democracia ( 2019) deals with the Portuguese revolution and the future of democracy.
Currently he is a researcher with the Center for Interdisciplinary studies of the University of Coimbra and founder of Forum Demos. He was the Director of the European Union Institute for Security Studies between May 2007 and May 2012, and headed the Institute of Strategic and International Studies (IEEI) in Lisbon, of which he is a co-founder, from 1981 to 2007.
