Sándor Weöres

Sándor Weöres (1913 – 1989) moved to Budapest in 1947 after spending much of his childhood in western Hungary. After the Communist takeover in 1949 he was permitted to publish only translations and children’s poetry. His mature poetry was influenced by the poets of the leading Hungarian literary periodical Nyugat / West. His Collected Poems appeared in 1996.
