# Call for submissions, The architecture of war

How does the built environment shape conflict today? To what degree are the spaces we live in determined by war and violence? The cityscapes which we are so accustomed to are being continuously changed in preparation for potential attacks, impacting not only our relationship with our surroundings, but also how we interact with each other. 

openDemocracy’s *Discourses* exhibition and discussion series is currently taking artistic submissions for our next event, *The architecture of war*, opening on January 6th, 2011.

The event will feature three emerging visual artists whose contribution should explore how the design of a city can shape and is shaped by conflict. The opening night will also feature a discussion on architecture and war.

Proposals along with CVs should be e-mailed to Anthony Faramelli at anthony.faramelli@opendemocracy.net **no later than November 12th**. The final decision will be made by November 19th.

openDemocracy is an online magazine recognised the world over for its publication of quality essays and articles on human rights and democracy.

*Discourses* is openDemocracy’s quarterly series of exhibitions, each launched with a corresponding panel discussion on contemporary social/cultural issues covering a wide array of topics and themes: from the role of theory in art to financial crises; from subaltern art and representation to architecture and war. 

These live events will showcase established and emerging artists while allowing the general public to interact with both our writers and the artists, fostering a greater understanding of the artists' work as well as the relationship that exists between art and the social, cultural and political contexts which shape and drive it.
