The Club de Madrid is an independent organisation whose purpose it is to contribute to the strengthening of democracy around the world. Its members are democratically elected former heads of state and government. The Club de Madrid launches global initiatives, conducts projects, and acts as a consultative body for governments, democratic leaders and institutions involved in processes of democratic transition. The Club de Madrid hosted the International Summit on Democracy, Terrorism and Security in Madrid in March 2005, the largest ever gathering of terrorism and security experts. The conference’s final document – agreed unanimously by the members of the Club – outlined what many believed to be a new consensus in the fight against terrorism.
