Submission Guidelines
We welcome submissions. Articles should generally be between 800 and 1500 words. Accompanying photographs and podcasts are welcome. Please make sure - and provide evidence - that you have obtained copyright for any such material that is not in the public domain.
We publish on a very wide range of subjects - especially those that deal with aspects of the domestic or international economy, human rights, politics, social movements, and so on. Among the themes for which openDemocracy is well known are:
Democracy and accountability: transparency, corruption, freedom of expression, impunity, accountability, social activism, security etc.
Economy: Equality and inequality, poverty and social justice, globalisation, land ownership
Violence between and within countries and regions: drug trafficking, official brutality, racism, treatment of minorities including native people, media intimidation and censorship…
Cities: Housing, slums and urban infrastructures, gentrification, public spaces…
Geopolitics: relations between countries, regional integration, migration
Comment Sections
We consider the comment sections to be as important as the main articles. Comments are moderated, and those that, in the opinion of the editors, are personally abusive or contain remarks that we consider to be racist, sexist, or homophobic will be eliminated.
