**Tom Griffin (London,** [**OK**](https://www.opendemocracy.net/ourkingdom)**):** [The Guardian's profile](http://www.guardian.co.uk/politics/2008/oct/02/sir.ian.blair?ref=opendemocracy.net) suggests Sir Ian Blair was a tragic figure, a reformist laid low by his own flaws. He certainly wasn't short of problems, not least the [inquest into the death of Jean Charles De Menezes](http://www.stockwellinquest.org.uk/?ref=opendemocracy.net) currently underway at the Oval.

In the end, however, it was the [determined opposition of London Mayor Boris Johnson](http://www.boriswatch.co.uk/2008/10/02/sir-ian-blair-pushed-out-by-boris/?ref=opendemocracy.net) which paved the way for the Metropolitan Police Commissioner's resignation this afternoon.

It will be interesting to see how much influence Johnson enjoys over the selection of Blair's successor, especially given the potential for controversy among some of the [contenders cited by the BBC](http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/7083587.stm?ref=opendemocracy.net).
