Others face **much bigger challenges** \- such as Yannis Stournaras, who has taken up the post as Greek finance minister! His friend [Yanis Varoufakis writes him a compelling open letter](https://www.opendemocracy.net/openeconomy/yanis-varoufakis/open-letter-to-good-friend-and-colleague). He isn’t the only economist to worry. Richard Layard and Paul Krugman lament that we’ve not learnt from the past, and urge all of us to support their [Manifesto for Economic Sense](https://www.opendemocracy.net/openeconomy/paul-krugman-richard-layard/manifesto-for-economic-sense). Meanwhile George Papandreou, the ex-Prime Minister of Greece [hits back](https://www.opendemocracy.net/jean-christophe-nothias/papandreou-speaks-truth-to-european-power#comment-573047452) at the way his country was treated.

We have decided to break open a special debate on the **future of the Euro**: can it be saved, should it be saved? David Malone engages with oD writers and asks [who we are really saving the Euro for](https://www.opendemocracy.net/david-malone/save-euro-who-for), while Victoria Curzon Price writes that the [slate must be wiped clean](https://www.opendemocracy.net/victoria-curzon-price/eurozone-crisis-slate-must-be-wiped) to salvage a deeply flawed project.

We believe **intelligent action can make a difference**. Susan Richards, one of openDemocracy’s founding editors, writes a [moving memoir](https://www.opendemocracy.net/od-russia/susan-richards/good-infection-%E2%80%93-remembering-bookaid) on a beautiful idea known as Bookaid. 1.4 million books were collected and sent as a “good infection” to what had only recently become the Soviet Union. In current day Russia, Dmitry Travin looks at a [generational gap](https://www.opendemocracy.net/od-russia/dmitry-travin/fathers-and-sons-generational-gap-in-russian-opposition); in Ukraine the status of [languages](https://www.opendemocracy.net/od-russia/mykola-riabchuk/playing-with-ambiguities-ukraine%E2%80%99s-language-law) causes dissatisfaction.

In one of many great pieces in this week’s [**window on the Middle East**](https://www.opendemocracy.net/freeform-tags/you-tell-us), Rita from Syria teaches us what it means to be “[wiping ElJokh](https://www.opendemocracy.net/rita-from-syria/trend-of-%E2%80%98wiping%E2%80%99-eljokh-sucking-up%E2%80%A6-one-of-oldest-inventions-of-syrian-regime)". For women, the post-spring Arab world can hold [disquiet and despair](https://www.opendemocracy.net/5050/deniz-kandiyoti/disquiet-and-despair-gender-sub-texts-of-%E2%80%9Carab-spring%E2%80%9D).

In **Britain** David Cameron is [held responsible](https://www.opendemocracy.net/ourkingdom/deborah-padfield/camerons-collective-responsibility) for his rhetoric, [a job-seeker set himself alight](https://www.opendemocracy.net/ourkingdom/niki-seth-smith/job-seeker-sets-himself-on-fire-how-will-cameron-respond) and [further scrutiny of security giant G4S](https://www.opendemocracy.net/ourkingdom/john-grayson/outsourcing-charity-%E2%80%93-g4s-way) shows its involvement in prisons and charities alike, while Mandy Rose sends an open letter to the incoming head of the BBC saying break the chains and [embrace non-linear, interactive programming](https://www.opendemocracy.net/ourbeeb/mandy-rose/breaking-chains-of-linear-programming-open-letter-to-future-dg).

In the US, **immigration reform** still has [a long way to go](https://www.opendemocracy.net/5050/elizabeth-kennedy/usa-dreaming-comprehensive-immigration-reform), the Pentagon plans for [war on Iran](https://www.opendemocracy.net/paul-rogers/americas-war-on-iran-plan-revealed), and little has changed when it comes to policy on [Latin America](https://www.opendemocracy.net/john-perry/honduras-three-years-after-coup). In India, Maoists continue with abductions, but overtures for a peaceful resolution have been met by [government indifference](https://www.opendemocracy.net/opensecurity/basudev-mahapatra/maoist-hostage-crisis-in-india-government-indifference-makes-maoists-).

We hope you are anything but indifferent to our new look - your [suggestions and feedback](https://www.opendemocracy.net/contact) are most welcome!
