Many years before the first clouds of the crisis would hover over Greek skies, amidst Greek society's most glorious of moments and its most mundane of days, the lives and labour of migrants were faced with a meticulous devaluation. For them, the crisis has now come of age. Despite shallow journalistic interpretations of a "humanitarian crisis", for the migrants there is nothing humanitarian about it. For the migrants of Athens, the crisis was from the upstart orchestrated politically, socially and militarily. The discourse on racism in crisis-ridden Greece merely obfuscates, for it obscures exactly how structural this devaluation has been for the development of the Greek state itself. Yet the crisis knows how to twist meanings too. Today, migrants are accused of the very decline of the Greek edifice. And within this twisted world, their devaluation takes on a more offensive and, at the same time, a more legitimate form. Impossible Biographies, as part of the research project The City at a Time of Crisis, bears witness to this offensive. Today, just like yesterday, the devalued lives of migrants shall remind us how it is to live and die within an enforced anonymity and invisibility. How it is to live a life whose biography is impossible.

Πολλά χρόνια πριν τα πρώτα σύννεφα της κρίσης σκεπάσουν τον ελληνικό ουρανό, στις πιο ένδοξες στιγμές και στις πιο ανιαρές ημέρες της ελληνικής κοινωνίας δρομολογούταν με ζήλο η υποτίμηση της εργασίας και της ζωής των μεταναστών/τριών. Η κρίση γι' αυτές/ούς έχει, πια, ενηλικιωθεί. Και, σε πείσμα των ευρημάτων μιας ρηχής δημοσιογραφίας, δε φέρει τίποτα το ανθρωπιστικό. Γιατί οργανώθηκε, εξαρχής, πολιτικά, κοινωνικά και στρατιωτικά. Ο λόγος για το ρατσισμό στην ελλάδα της κρίσης, απλώς, συσκοτίζει και βολεύει. Και αποκρύπτει το πόσο δομική ήταν αυτή η υποτίμηση για την ίδια την ανάπτυξη του ελληνικού κράτους και την αυτο-αντίληψη της ελληνικής κοινωνίας. Αλλά η κρίση ξέρει να αντιστρέφει και τα νοήματα. Σήμερα, οι μετανάστριες/ες κατηγορούνται για την ίδια την παρακμή του ελληνικού οικοδομήματος. Και μέσα σε τούτο τον αντεστραμμένο κόσμο η υποτίμησή τους γίνεται πιο επιθετική και πιο νομιμοποιημένη. Το φιλμ Impossible Biographies, ως μέρος του ερευνητικού εγχειρήματος The City at a Time of Crisis, γίνεται μάρτυρας αυτής της επίθεσης. Σήμερα, όπως και χθες, οι υποτιμημένες ζωές των μεταναστών/ριών θα μας θυμίζουν πώς είναι να ζεις και να πεθαίνεις μέσα στην εξαναγκασμένη ανωνυμία και την αορατότητα. Πώς είναι να ζεις μία ζωή μη βιογραφήσιμη.
