Part 1: The nuclear threat

Martin Rees on narrowly avoiding nuclear catastrophe during the Cold War. Although there are fewer nuclear weapons worldwide today, the global nuclear threat is only in abeyance. Pakistan and North Korea are of particular concern, and there are also uncertainties due to the proliferation of nuclear power. The five major nuclear powers must do more to reduce their nuclear arsenals if they want to prevent further proliferation.
