**Tom Griffin (London,** [**OK**](https://www.opendemocracy.net/ourkingdom)**):** Steve McQueen's award-winning film about the 1981 hunger strike prompted mixed opinions on OurKingdom. Both [Michael Calderbank ](https://www.opendemocracy.net/blog/ourkingdom-theme/michael-calderbank/2008/11/12/the-body-as-a-terrain-of-struggle-hunger-reviewed)and [Arthur Aughey](https://www.opendemocracy.net/blog/email/arthur-aughey/2008/12/27/reshaping-the-dry-stone-wall-of-irish-history) noted an absence of wider political context in the film. Calderbank nevertheless found much to be admired in Hunger, while Aughey was more critical of a lack of Protestant perspectives.

The politics of the hunger strikes will be very much up for debate on Saturday, when the [Rio Cinema](http://www.riocinema.ndirect.co.uk/?ref=opendemocracy.net) in Hackney hosts a special screening of the film, followed by a [discussion with Seanna Walsh](http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#/event.php?eid=38610558515), who succeeded Bobby Sands as leader of the republican prisoners in the H-blocks.
