The October 2007 edition of the international anti-fascist magazine [*Searchlight*](http://www.searchlightmagazine.com/?ref=opendemocracy.net) has a topical article ("The browning of the BNP") on what it identifies as the intellectual affinity between the British National Party and the clammy ideological impulses that inform Martin Durkin's documentary [*The Great Global Warming Swindle*](http://www.channel4.com/science/microsites/G/great%5Fglobal%5Fwarming%5Fswindle/?ref=opendemocracy.net), shown on Channel 4 in Britain in March 2007.

An entertaining if familiar tour of the deep background of Durkin's film - the ideological evolution that leads from the Revolutionary Communist Party (RCP) to *Living Marxism* to *LM Magazine* to [*Spiked*](http://www.spiked-online.com/?ref=opendemocracy.net) and the [Institute of Ideas](http://www.instituteofideas.com/?ref=opendemocracy.net) (IoI) - echoes earlier surveys by George Monbiot ([here](http://www.monbiot.com/archives/2003/12/09/invasion-of-the-entryists/?ref=opendemocracy.net) and [here](http://www.monbiot.com/archives/1997/12/18/the-revolution-has-been-televised/?ref=opendemocracy.net)), [GMWatch](http://www.lobbywatch.org/profile1.asp?PrId=78&ref=opendemocracy.net) and [LobbyWatch](http://www.lobbywatch.org/p1temp.asp?pid=39&page=1&ref=opendemocracy.net) while adding an ultra-right frisson.

But the dissection of this trajectory of supercharged, cod-leftist, compulsively contrarian, relentlessly cynical Ayn Randism makes a shivery misidentification when it refers to [Mike Hulme](http://www.tyndall.ac.uk/generate/staffprint/staff-view.php?id=85&title=Hulme+M&ref=opendemocracy.net) (leading climate scientist at the [Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research](http://www.tyndall.ac.uk/index.shtml?ref=opendemocracy.net), and [participant](http://www.battleofideas.org.uk/index.php/site/session%5Fdetail/190/?ref=opendemocracy.net) in the IoI's [forthcoming](http://www.battleofideas.org.uk/?ref=opendemocracy.net)[ festival](http://www.battleofideas.org.uk/?ref=opendemocracy.net)) rather than [Mick Hume](http://www.spiked-online.com/Sections/Central/About/spiked%2520people.htm?ref=opendemocracy.net) as the ex-editor of *Spiked*. The misnaming is familiar - see DK Renton (and a wider story of RCP - at least - indulgence, [here](http://www.dkrenton.co.uk/living%5Fmarxism%5Frcp%5Fspiked%5Fonline.html?ref=opendemocracy.net)), but this confusion of the serious and the gruesome is of a different order.
